Acne eruptions can be embarrassing and painful so finding the best treatment options to combat them when they happen can go a long way to relieve the frustration and discomfort for those who are suffering. Acne treatments are generally based on the severity of the outbreak. Treatments range from the use of cleansers and topical lotions to surgery that is used to remove deep cysts.

Mild cases of acne are evidenced by small lesions or blackheads. In most mild cases inflammation is absent all together or is minimal. Successful acne treatment may include gentle washing using a mild soap. In addition, topical over the counter treatments made from salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide may be helpful.

For more advanced acne treatment that can cover from 1/2 to 2/3 of an area and where there are high concentrations of black and white heads, and pimples (papules and pustules), the intervention of a dermatologist may be desired. A treatment regiment could include light therapy or comedo (blocked pore) extraction. In addition prescription medications such as oral contraceptives or antibiotics are often implemented. Prescription topical treatments are often used alone or in conjunction with oral medications. Topical retinoids and antimicrobials are frequently used acne treatments.

In severe cases of acne where deep cysts are present, surgical treatment options may be used. Further, severe acnes may lead to extensive damage to the skin that leaves scarring which will also be treated. Sometimes severe acne treatment includes interlesional corticosteroid injections. Another tactic dermatologists often use is a synthetic retinoid, a form of vitamin A, called Isoretinoin that reduces oil production and inflammation and in addition, combats P.acnes (bacteria present in acne). All acne medications and treatment may have some side effects and therefore it’s important to ask the dermatologist or pharmacists what potential problems are possible before beginning an acne treatment regiment.
