Acne negatively impacts millions of people. As bad as an outbreak is, acne scarring can be equally devastating and have life-long consequences. Acne peels are products that are used to help control outbreaks and to help minimizing scarring. Acne peels can be used at home or in a clinical setting. The chemical formulations vary in strength and recovery time. So carefully considering the options before proceeding is advisable.

Dermatologist routinely use acne peels made from different forms of acid. The mildest of these are made from Alphahydroxy acids (AHA). These acids are derived from glycolic, fruit acids and lactic acid. In fact many of these are the same compounds found in natural acne peels found in health stores. Mild formulations are also made from beta hydroxyl acids (BHA). Side effects and complications from AHAs and BHAs are generally mild and short lasting. For example, some redness and stinging may occur, but these disappear in a short duration.

Stronger acne peels are made from tricholoracetic acid (TCA). TCA is used to help reduce the impact of acne scarring and also addresses pigment changes that can accompany acne. TCAs can be customized for strength based on individual needs. Sometimes more than one application may be necessary. TCA may cause some changes in skin coloration. In addition, patients are advised to restrict exposure to the sun.

The strongest acne peels are made from Phenol. Phenol is powerful and as such runs a higher risk of side effects, and a prolonged healing time. Phenol can make significant difference in the appearance of acne and scarring. Further it is used to eliminate wrinkles and precancerous lesions. Caution should be used for people with darker pigmentation because phenol can lighten treated areas. Further phenol is only used on the face as it may scar other areas on the body. All acne peels have some risk associated with their use. In addition, sun exposure should be monitored after an acne peel.
