When I talk it is hard to talk and sometimes it comes out scratchy.

Hoarse voice or scratchy voice is a term referred to a condition where there is inflammation of the larynx or the voice box.

Causes of hoarseness:

  • Attack of cold due to virus or bacteria
  • Drinking hot or extremely cold fluids
  • Drinking cold beverages, ice-cream, fried foods,
  • Eating condiments and spices, alcohol and smoking
  • Persons speaking loudly, singers, speakers.
  • Growth in larynx
  • Allergies to perfumes and other chemicals

Symptoms and signs:

  • Sore throat with difficulty in swallowing, fever and cough
  • Temporary loss of voice, hoarseness of voice
  • Chronic laryngitis can be a result of continuous straining of voice; a person tries to clear the throat often to relieve him self.

Home remedies for hoarse and scratchy voice:

  • Inhalation of vapors coming out from hot water in which few drops of eucalyptus oil is added.
  • Add turmeric powder in hot milk, and drink the mixture twice in a day.
  • Same way instead of turmeric powder, black pepper can also be added to hot milk before drinking.
  • Fresh juice of basil leaves and honey in a teaspoon taken twice in a day sooths the throat.
  • Salt water gargling is also helpful in bringing the scratchy voice back to normal
  • Liquorice powder mixed in milk should be taken once in a day.

Precaution to be followed:

  • Do not expose the throat to cold drinks, spices, cold water, or any other air pollutants

Note: An ENT specialist opinion is necessary if the scratchy voice persists for a long time, even after taking all precautionary and remedial measure.
