Remedies, Causes of Whooping Cough Infection | Symptoms of Whooping Cough
Whooping Cough Infection:
Whooping Cough is a bacterial infection that spreads through air medium. The incubation time is
about seven to fourteen days.
- Stage I – Resembles a flu with a cough (catarrh/phlegm thick liquid in the nose and throat, caused by a cold). Fever rarely rises above 102 degree Fahrenheit and it lasts for about two weeks.
- Stage II – Characteristic whooping cough; wherein air is drawn into the lungs with a whistling sound and bronchial mucus comes out with great difficulty.It is often accompanied by vomiting and normal temperature. Stage II lasts for about six week’s, however in severe cases it may take longer.
- Stage III – There is a slow decrease in the number of coughing spells, while the duration may vary.
Diagnosis of whooping cough is possible only through a blood test. Danger of infection is greatest during first stage. Whooping cough is very serious and even life threatening for babies and children below one year.
Tip: Whooping cough are accompanied by vomiting and breathing difficulties (Stage II). So do not allow the child to sleep alone. Loss of sleep during the night should be made up during the day.
Attention: Keep the sick and infected child away from other healthy babies and small children. Keep them indoors as per your Physician’s instructions.
Symptoms of Whooping Cough:
- Stage I – Similar to a flu with a cough. Fever rarely rises above 102 degree Fahrenheit and lasts for about one to two weeks.
Treatment – The same used for Viral infection (Flu)
- Stage II – Characteristic whooping cough; coughing attacks usually at night, accompanied by vomiting; nose bleeds; cold sweats; face complexion is pale or bluish; excess gas formation; lower legs are cold; wants to be fanned with cool air.
Worse – warm rooms
Better – fresh air, cold drinks
Remedy – Carbo vegetabilis 30
- Choking and cramp-like cough, particularly while waking up; coughing attacks usually during the night accompanied by breathing difficulties; loud rattling sounds due to mucus; thick, glassy, mucus is expelled while coughing.
Worse – motion, warm drinks, warmth, nights
Better – cold air, cold drinks
Remedy – Coccus cacti
- Face turns red before a Whooping cough attack, later gasps for air; after sometime cramp-like coughing; extremely exhausted after coughing attacks, nose bleeds; very sensitive to cold air.
Worse – cold, nights
Better – warm rooms
Remedy – Corallium rubrum
- Severe, cramp-like, long coughing attacks with breathing difficulties; face color changes to dark/red blue; hands are cold; vomiting; very exhausted; cramps in arms, legs and hands while coughing.
Worse – during the night around three
Better – when sipping water
Remedy – Cuprum metallicum
- Dry, cramp-like coughing, particularly at night; clutches chest during coughing; face turns dark red to bluish; short, severe attacks of fear of suffocation; frequent nosebleeds and vomiting; but not exhausted; swelling of arteries in the head.
Worse – shortly before midnight
Remedy – Drosera
- Dry, choking, weak-coughing with fear of suffocation; mucus produces rattling in the bronchial tubes; mucus is very thick and difficult to be expelled; cramp; pale complexion with dark circles under the eyes; vomiting with nose bleeds.
Worse – motion
Better – cold drinks
Remedy – Ipecacuanha
- Severe, cramp-like cough with breathing difficulties and fear of death, particularly at night; cannot breathe out – has to be lifted off pillow; rattling sound from the bronchial tubes; face turns bluish, eyes often red; frequency of attacks less during the day.
Worse – during the night
Remedy – Mephitis
- When measles is followed by whooping cough; dry, cramp-like cough with fear of suffocation when lying down, has to sit up; feels cold easily but cannot handle warmth.
Worse – humid/warm weather, in the evening, night
Better – fresh air
