Throat Obstruction:
When there is an obstruction in one’s throat, it is usually due to a foreign object or a huge chunk of food that would find a hard time going down the throat. When this happens, it would likely obstruct the air passageway, thus preventing and inhibiting the person to breathe properly.
What to Do
- When there is an obstruction, first the severity of the condition should be assessed.
- If the person loses consciousness due to the obstruction, allow the person to lie down. Check if the person is still breathing.
- If the person is not breathing, do mouth to mouth resuscitation.Watch the rise and fall of the chest.
- Do not attempt to remove the obstruction yourself.
- However, if the obstruction can be seen, a finger swipe method can be done.
- If the person is still consciousness and is having difficulty breathing, the Heimlich maneuver can be done.
Heimlich Maneuver
Here are the simple steps you need to follow to be able to do the Heimlich maneuver the proper way:
- Stand behind the choking person.
- Make a fist in your dominant hand and place it in the xiphoid process or the middlemost area in the lower part of our breastbone.
- The non-dominant hand will support the other and perform strong thrusts.
- The pressure will enable the food or the choking material to go back up and thus expelling it.
Important Things to Take Note Of
These kinds of procedures should be done with limitations. The Heimlich maneuver for one cannot be performed on infants and babies. Tapping the back of an infant is usually an option; however, considerations need to be noted for the risk of spinal injury.
Prevention of Throat Obstructions
These are the following things you can do to prevent throat obstruction from occurring:
- Children should not be given or handed hard solid foods that would likely cause the choking.
- Eat and chew your food very well before swallowing.
- Eat slowly.
- Do not force yourself to swallow something you know is big in size.
When there is an obstruction, it is best to have first aid or medical personnel nearby. When this usually happens in local restaurants, asking around for anybody who has a medical background would be best. Seeking or calling for medical assistance would be the next ideal thing to do.
