What is Phlegm
Persistent productive cough would usually cause the expectoration of sputum and phlegm. It either is usually caused by viral or bacterial elements, and you can assess it by merely looking at the sputum. If you notice transparent mucus, it may be caused by just a virus. However, if you can see that the sputum is yellowish green in color, it is likely that it is caused by bacteria.
If the cough is persistent for more than a month, it is best and highly advisable that you seek medical help to rule out other health condition and at the same time get better diagnosis for your condition and eventually have proper treatment.
Causes of Phlegm:
Phlegm is usually produced by the mucolytic cells found in the trachea. It usually facilitates in the prevention of other foreign materials to enter the lungs, thus it serves as a surfactant. However, there are certain factors that would stimulate these cells to produce an increase of mucus or phlegm.
- Smoking: Smoking is an irritant to the respiratory system. As the mucolytic cells are stimulated due to the presence of irritants, there would be an increase of sputum production.
- Underlying respiratory condition such as pneumonia and tuberculosis. These conditions usually have increased phlegm and sputum production as well.If you are suffering from these illnesses, it is best that you seek medical assistance.
- If one is experiencing a bacterial or viral infection, the body compensates and reacts. This would result to the increase of sputum and phlegm in the respiratory tract.
Treat Phlegm:
- Increase your fluid intake. As fluid supply in the body is increased, there is easier facilitation of the removal and expectoration of the phlegm and sputum.
- Make honey and lemon mixture and drink the solution.
- Chest tapping also works. Done early in the morning before breakfast. Hands are cupped in form, and chest tapping is done to loosen the phlegm and facilitate the expectoration process.
- Eating healthy and nutritious food usually helps as well in facilitating the removal of phlegm and sputum.
How to Prevent Phlegm:
- Quit smoking.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages.
- Eat healthy and nutritious food.
- Observe proper hygiene and healthy lifestyle.
- Exercise daily.
- Get enough good sleep.
