A goiter is an enlargement of thyroid gland. Thyroid gland is situated in the anterior side of the neck just underneath the Adams apple. It is of H shape.

Goiter can be classified as follows:

  • Simple goiter.
  • Toxic goiter
  • Neoplastic goiter.
  • Thyroiditis

Goiter Symptoms

Simple goiter is frequently seen in women, although men are also at risk of goiter.

The symptoms of goiter may be tightness in throat, hoarse voice, cough and difficulty in breathing.

Thyroid gland regulates the vital functions of body. It produces hormones for its function.

Goiter is not a malignant disease.

Deficiency of iodine is the most common cause of goiter.

In developed countries goiter is not frequently observed due to supplementation of iodine in salt. In such countries the reason for goiter may be due to overproduction of thyroid hormone or underproduction of hormone. The other reason may be developing nodule in the thyroid gland.

Treatment of goiter will depend on the underlying cause and the size of the gland.

Prevention of goiter through dietary measure such as: including iodized salt in diet, eating sea food as it contains more iodine. Shrimp, shellfish, seaweeds are rich source of iodine.

Preventing overexposure to radiation: be it as a treatment, or in a working environment.

Goiter patient should maintain healthy lifestyle and food.

    I am suffering from a benign Thyroid goiter for some time now. I want to know what are the foods that should be avoided with goiter? Also please let me know is it good to eat seafood in this condition?
