Natural Cough Expectorant
Cough is a common symptom of respiratory tract infection, it may be a dry cough or a productive cough.
Traditionally cough expectorants are used to liquefy the hardened mucus in the chest. Conventional modern medicine expectorants contain ingredients which may liquefy cough, but may have side effects of drowsiness, which may hamper daily activities like driving a vehicle, work disturbance etc.
Homemade Cough Expectorant
Simple home remedies for cough expectorants are free of drowsiness, and simple to prepare at home:
- Grapes are considered as one of the most effective natural cough expectorant home remedy.A cup of grapes juice mixed with one teaspoon of honey is advised for cough relief. Grapes tone up the lungs and act as a cough expectorant.
- Onions: The use of raw onion is valuable in expectorating cough. The vegetable should be chopped fine and the juice should be extracted from it. One teaspoon of onion juice should be mixed with honey and consumed twice in a day to loosen the hard cough. It acts well as a cough expectorant.
- Aniseed is another home remedy used frequently as cough expectorant. It breaks up the mucus and helps the phlegm to come out.A tea made from aniseed taken regularly twice in a day relieves the cough symptoms.
- Patient should drink water liberally.
- Ginger: 1/2 tsp of ginger juice mixed with 1 tsp of honey and 1 tsp of basil leaf juice taken once in a day helps to combat cough and promotes mucus expectoration.
