Colloid Nodular Goiter Causes, Symptoms | Endemic Goiter Treatment

I am suffering from colloid goiter and suffering from past six months, so want to know the best and easiest way to prevent this in future.

Answer:

Colloid goiter is swelling of the thyroid gland which is present in the neck.

The other name is Endemic goiter.

Causes of Endemic or Colloid Goiter

• Enlargement of the thyroid gland occurs due to iodine deficiency in our diet.
• This disease is more common in areas which are depleted of iodine in the soil.
  They are usually away from the sea, and are common in certain mountainous areas.
• Females are more prone to this disease.
• Family history of goiter.

Symptoms of Colloid Goiter

• Enlargement of thyroid gland.
• Enlarged neck veins
• Some times breathing difficulty.
• If the thyroid is more enlarged, difficulty in swallowing.
• Increased pulse rate, tremors in fingers, increased palpitation, profuse sweating.
• Investigations to be carried out:
• Blood test for thyroid hormone level.
  T3, T4, TSH.
• Radioactive isotope uptake.
• Thyroid scan and thyroid ultra sound.

Treatment of Endemic Goiter

• Iodine in organic form is helpful in most of the cases. All foods containing iodine should be taken liberally. These foods are Carrots, Garlic, Turnips, Oats, onions, Sea food, tomatoes, whole Rice, Citrus fruits, and Egg yolk.
• Iodized salt in the diet.
• In some cases radioactive iodine is helpful.
• Thyroid hormone replacement therapy in some cases.
  But if iodine fortified food or salt is used this may not be necessary.
• The prognosis is good if the iodine deficiency is corrected.
