Chemical imbalance in the brain causes certain problems, often mental, psychological, or psychiatric ailments or problems. Some of these problems are depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and certain phobias.

Chemical imbalance is one of the theories that scientists have set forth to explain certain disorders or ailments. It is believed that the imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain causes these disorders. It is easier to understand chemical imbalance if its symptoms are also known.

  • A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) can measure the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain. However, this test is very expensive and is not readily available. Thus, this is used mostly for correcting the abnormal levels, not as a diagnostic tool.
  • The best way to diagnose or test for chemical imbalance is for the mental health professional to evaluate the symptoms. Certain tests will have to be administered to check for perception, behavior, mental capacity, mood, speech changes, and other factors.

Treatment For Chemical Imbalance

  • The patient may be administered with certain medications to help regain the correct balance of the chemicals in the brain.
  • The patient may also have to undergo counseling and therapy sessions to help improve the patient’s outlook in life. This will also help hasten the treatment procedure.
