Will Chantix really help me quit smoking?

Chantix is a smoking cessation prescription drug launched by Pfizer to help people get rid of their smoking habit. There have been mixed reviews about the benefits of Chantix (as is expected) and you have to consult your doctor before you can use this drug to help you quit smoking.

Is Chantix different from other products that help stop smoking?

There are number of other “get rid of smoking” habit drugs available.

Chantix claims that there drug does not contain nicotine, but does block the receptors from nicotine. Before you start your Chantix smoking cessation program, you must speak with your doctor. You must tell the doctor about any medical conditions you may have such as pregnancy, prior mental ailments, history of taking other smoking cessation drugs, kidney or liver problems. Your dosage of chantix may vary depending on these and many other factors.

I am not aware of the exact cost, but it was in the range for $120-$150 for a 30 day supply. I am not aware if insurance covers this prescription. But do keep an eye on discount coupons that you my have; with that Chantix maybe a bit cheaper.

What are the side effects of Chantix?

Smoking cessation is normally accompanied by nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Chantix side effect, similarly, may include nausea, gas or flatulence, , constipation.

What is varenicline? Is it another competitor to Chantix?

Varenicline is a drug that is used in Chantix. It is a “nicotinic receptor partial agonist”. This “agonist” helps reduce the pleasurable effects of smoking or other tobacco related products.

What is better? Nicotine Patches or Chantix?

What about Chantix Dosage?

First of all, you must be at least 18 years of age to take Chantix. Plus you should have consulted your doctor with pre existing medical conditions before you take this drug that may help you quit smoking. You need to decide on a date you want to stop smoking, and start taking Chantix 7 days prior to that date. For example, if you decide to stop smoking from December 23rd, you may start taking Chantix from December 16th, provided you have a prescription and a go-ahead from your doctor. You normally have to take Chantix for 12 weeks. This may vary depending on your doctors recommendations and based on how you react to this drug.
