Urinary incontinence is involuntary passage of urine. Many women experience this discomforting condition especially when they are pregnant. It is a miserable situation for pregnant women when she is unable to hold her urine voluntarily due to loss of control over the bladder sphincter or as a result of weakened pelvic floor muscles.
The severity of urinary incontinence may differ from one woman to another.For some it can be mild and less frequent while for others it can be too embarrassing. Pregnant women above the age of 35 or obese women are more prone to experience urinary incontinence.
Growing uterus and weak bladder sphincter are two major causes for loss of bladder control during pregnancy. The condition is also called stress incontinence. Proper bladder training during this period helps the woman control involuntary leakage of urine.
Causes Of Urinary Incontinence In Pregnancy
Normally urine accumulated in the bladder flows out of the body through urethra. It is a voluntary action. The muscles around the urethra relax and allow the urine to pass out. As soon as the bladder is empty, the muscles will contract and remain in that position until you are prepared to void again.
However, during pregnancy the contraction and relaxation of muscles that take part may be affected. This may occur partly because of hormonal changes during pregnancy and partly due to enlarged size of uterus. The growing uterus puts pressure on the bladder; therefore the condition is called stress incontinence. The sphincter or the valve between the bladder and urethra becomes weak. All these factors may cause leakage when you cough, sneeze or even while walking or lifting mild weight.
Pregnant women having family history of stress incontinence are at greater risk of experiencing this problem. Obesity, abnormal weight gain during pregnancy, and women over the age of 35 years are also susceptible to urinary incontinence.
Natural Remedies For Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence can make a woman’s life miserable during pregnancy. However, there are several natural ways to prevent and treat the leakage. Bladder training is the simplest way of treating leakage. It can be practiced at home. Fix a particular interval for your bathroom breaks. For example use the washroom after every two hours. This will not put extra pressure on the urethra and the muscle surrounding it.
Practice Kegels exercise. It is the most useful exercise that helps to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. You need to practice it to know what it exactly is. It is a simple exercise. Stop the flow for few seconds in between when you are urinating. This will cause contraction of muscles that are responsible preventing as allowing the urine to flow out of the body.
Once you have learnt this technique, you can practice it any time of the day even if the bladder is empty. Contract the pelvic floor muscles and hold it for few minutes before relaxing it. You can do as many times as you can to strengthen the pelvic muscles.
If you are obese, try to reduce you weight. Walk daily for 20 to30 minutes. Use of pessary is also beneficial in preventing involuntary urine as the device puts pressure on the urethral sphincter and prevents the leakage.
