Toothache During Pregnancy: Causes, Home Remedies and Treatment

Going through a dental examination is a must if you are considering getting pregnant. If you are already pregnant, one of your primary concerns must be your dental health because toothache during pregnancy can be one of your worst nightmares. For one, toothache can affect you and your baby. And if you have a bad tooth, extracting it while you are pregnant could harm your baby due to stress so that would mean you would have to wait for the next nine months before you would be relieved of pain.

Causes of Toothache During Pregnancy

You may not have any dental problem prior to pregnancy, but you should know that tooth infection during pregnancy is a common occurrence and pregnancy makes you susceptible to such condition because your nutrients, vitamins, and minerals are concentrated on the development of your baby.

If you do not get enough vitamins such as calcium, your calcium would go directly to your baby leaving you susceptible to varied conditions brought by calcium deficiency. One of the usual causes of toothache during pregnancy is the increase of hormone levels. If you do not take proper care of your teeth, it could lead to dental diseases such as periodontal disease, gingivitis and tumors.

Natural Treatment for Toothache During Pregnancy

Aside from visiting your dentist, you can also take some home remedies for toothache during pregnancy. These remedies include:

  • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste every after meal to prevent infection.
  • Floss at least once a day.
  • Avoid eating sweets and sugary food as they can cause plaque and tartar build up. If you must eat sweets, be sure to brush your teeth right away.
  • Get a clove of garlic, chew it and place it on your affected teeth to get rid of the pain.
