Home, Urine Pregnancy Test | How to Know if You Are Pregnant

Question:

I saw my period last on the 4th of November 2009. I was expecting my ovulation signs, but never saw it. I’d had un-protected sex that month, so when I missed  my period, I thought I was pregnant. I did a home pregnancy test twice, but it was negative. Did a serum pt, scan, but nothing. My breasts feel heavy, I always feel wet with everyday discharge, but I’m confused. am I pregnant?

Answer:

Blood, Ultrasound Pregnancy Test

The urine pregnancy test measures the Human Chorionic Gonadodotropin (HCG), i.e., the pregnancy hormone, that confirms conception.

Occasionally, a UPT (urine pregnancy test) could give false negative results. This could happen, if you have got the test done too early, when, the pregnancy hormone has not appeared in the urine as yet. It could even occur, if the urine is too dilute. So, checking it once again is highly recommended. Also, ensure that the urine sample is collected in the morning, since, the level of hormones is higher at that time of the day. Also, make sure, that you collect the very first urine sample.

Sometimes, a second test might also reveal negative results.

Hence, in such cases, getting a blood test is advocated, to confirm conception.

USG or an ultra sound verifies pregnancy only after 5 weeks of the missed period. Getting it done before 5 weeks, will thus, not yield any results.

Also, watch out for these symptoms. They are definite tell-tale signs of pregnancy. Morning sickness, that is, nausea and / or vomiting on rising in the morning, weakness and fatigue, fullness or heaviness of the breasts, and an increased frequency of urination.

Consulting a gynecologist is recommended to allay your anxiety / confusion.
