There is a sensation in the stomach that rotates or moves up and down all of a sudden. When your mouth waters you run to the bathroom to vomit. That is morning sickness also called Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy NVP. It is the most common and weakening symptom of pregnancy. For most women these symptoms end with the first trimester. But for some it may continue in the second and third semester.

Causes of Morning Sickness / Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy

  • Increase in HCG hormones in early pregnancy.
  • Changes in the immune system.
  • Hormonal changes that relax gastrointestinal tract and slows down digestion.
  • Deficiency of Vitamin B and B6.
  • It is also considered as a defense mechanism to protect the mother and child from harmful microorganisms and toxins in food.

Remedies and Safety – The following treatments have helped lessen symptoms of NVP. But consult your doctor before taking any new supplements.

  • Supplements of Vitamin B and B6 help reduce NVP symptoms.
  • Ginger helps the stomach to settle down. It can be used in teas, foods and other forms.
  • Acupressure bands are beneficial in the treatment of NVP. They are inexpensive and are available at most drug stores.

Other treatments that are helpful in easing NVP symptoms

  • Keep your mouth fresh and clean. Brushing regularly helps reduce excess saliva that troubles some pregnant women. Breath mints can be used for a fresh feeling.
  • Avoid dehydration. So drink plenty of fluids. You also need to replace the fluids lost during vomiting. Try juicy fruits like watermelon if water and juices are not working. For some women beverages taken between meals works better than that with meals.
  • Keep eating smaller, frequent meals. An empty stomach makes you feel worse because it produces acid. Besides low blood sugar causes nausea too.
  • Most women complain of dislike towards at least one food. Avoid the food that increases your NVP symptoms. Eat what appeals to you because they are likely to be tolerated.
  • Protein rich foods like yogurt and beans and Complex carbohydrates like whole grains and baked potato may calm your stomach and are beneficial for both the baby and the mother.
  • If prenatal vitamins are making you sick, then perhaps formulation or chewable form will help. Iron is quite taxing on the stomach. So you may be advised a lower form or extended release amount. And if everything fails then you may have to avoid taking it until NVP has passed.

How to Cope -
Constant nausea and vomiting may affect your positive attitude. You may wonder why you got pregnant. But try and convince yourself that these symptoms will persist for over one trimester only. Stick close to home and take things coolly. If you are a working lady then talk to your employer about some flexibility in your work schedule. Working from home for some days is a good option.

Your car should be equipped with Morning sickness survival kit. It should contain a small bottle of water, tissues, wet wipes, gum breath mints, soda crackers, tooth brush and toothpaste, an extra set of clothes and large zipper lock bags.

When it is more than Morning Sickness
When the morning sickness is very severe and cannot tolerate anything. Then the body is deficit of food also. The body is unable to get the energy it needs from food. So it will start using stored fat to produce energy. This condition is called Ketosis. It produces ketones in the blood stream that are harmful for the fetus. So if you are suffering from severe and routine nausea and vomiting your doctor may test your urine for ketones.

A small percentage of women about three percent suffer from severe form of morning sickness called hyper emesis gravid arum. The symptoms include loss of weight, inability to keep any food or fluids down and finding it impossible to function normally.

Morning Sickness Treatment – Sometimes hospitalization becomes unavoidable. In slightly better circumstances intravenous fluids are given to restore fluid and electrolyte balance. In some cases antiemetic (drugs to stop vomiting) are used. But remember to discuss the potential side effects on the fetus.

My wife is about 2 months pregnant on her third pregnancy. For her both 1st and 2nd pregnancy she had severe NVP up to trimester and so expected for this time. Her doctor suggested Domperidon tablets which have lowered the vomiting frequency but still with uncontrollable spitting. Is there advice on the use of Domperidon for a pregnant women?
