Causes of Amenorrhea or Irregular Periods | Causes of Missed Periods

Question: My expected date of period was 18th June. Normally I have menstrual cycle of 30 days but my periods are late since last four days and I had clear liquid vaginal secretion just like the lubrication on the expected period of menstruation. Earlier I was having bloating feeling in the stomach and later slight pain in the naval area. Is this an early symptom of pregnancy? When shall I go for the pregnancy test?

Answer: Minor inconsistencies and irregularities in the menses are common and should not cause alarm unless they are frequently recurring and chronic.

Pregnancy must be ruled at in the first stage as a probable cause for delayed menses. The easiest way to rule out is taking a urine test immediately.

Symptoms of pregnancy:

• Skipped menses
• Morning sickness (nausea and vomiting)
• Slight fatigue and giddiness

Causes of amenorrhea:

• Amenorrhea (non-appearance of menses) occurs due to stress at work and home, pressures, worries, tensions, emotional trauma, grief are known causes of missed periods.
  It will resolve by itself. But it will be necessary to take steps to combat stress and prevent it from becoming a maintaining cause.
• It also indicates that the system has been devitalized due to faulty eating habits and toxicity within the body.
• Severe illnesses of long standing (jaundice, typhoid, etc) can also cause amenorrhea.
• Discontinuing contraceptive pills, after prolonged use, might be a factor.
