Baby Not Breastfeeding: Red Spots of Face, Head of Child

Question: My child is 3 months old. She does not feed on breast milk. She has always gastric and constipation problem. A red spot is visible on her cheek. After using oil, red colored dots are appearing on her head. Is there any home remedy for the above problems? How to start breastfeeding again?

Answer: I am assuming your child is not breastfeeding for some reason. Bottle fed babies from cow milk, usually develop gastric problem of constipation and more often diarrhea.

Sometimes, hygiene is not maintained while feeding through the bottle leading to diarrhea. So try to feed your child with breast milk.

As for other cause of red spots on your child’s head, it is certainly some type of allergy, most likely due to oil application. Avoid applying oil on your child’s head.

It is a known fact and scientifically proven, that mother’s breast milk is the healthiest form of nutrition for an infant.

Breastfeeding has lot of advantages:

  1. It promotes health.
  2. Builds up the immune system of the baby, so helps to prevent diseases in them.
  3. Reduces health care cost, and feeding cost.
  4. Mother’s milk has all the necessary nutrients in the balanced form which are appropriate for the baby.

WHO (World Health Organization) and AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) have also emphasized on the importance of breast feeding. Both have recommended breast feeding exclusively for a period of 6 months, supplemented by weaning after 6 months.

Benefit of breastfeeding for the mother is: Breast feeding consumes almost 600 calories per day of the mother, and thus helps to loose weight.

From the above facts it is clear, to breast feed your baby for at least 6 months, and start weaning after wards.
