Question: When is the safest time to have an abortion?

Answer: Medical Termination of Pregnancy is legally allowed up to 20 weeks; however it is advisable to do an MTP before 12 weeks (i.e. 3 months)

Organogenesis (development of all organs of the fetus) is completed by 3 months. Since the fetus is small and undeveloped at this juncture, the MTP procedure involved (D&C) is simpler less complicated and poses lesser risk to the mother. The chances of toxemia and septicemia are higher, if the procedure is done after the age of 12 weeks.

If you have conceived and if you don’t want the baby, you should visit your gynecologist and undergo the MTP at the earliest.

Also try to use precaution the next time as repeated MTP will have an impact on your ability to conceive in future.

Medical termination of pregnancy (abortion) in recent times is usually uneventful; however as with any surgical procedures there is an attached risk and complication even with MTP.
First select an experienced and competent surgeon, and an antiseptic hospital atmosphere.
      Complications are:
      • Infection.
      • Perforation of uterus.
      • Prolonged bleeding.
      • Complication of anesthesia.
