6 Weeks Pregnant: Symptoms, Precautions, Tests during your 6th week of Pregnancy
6 Weeks Pregnant
By the sixth week there can be little doubt as to whether you are pregnant or not. Apart from the absence of your last expected menstrual period marked physical changes may also become visible.
Developments and 6 weeks Pregnant Symptoms
- The 6th week is extremely crucial to your baby because of the formation of the internal organs.
- Your baby’s heartbeat is now fairly distinct and can in fact be picked up in an ultrasound.
- During this stage your baby would be just about half a centimeter or three fourths of an inch.
- The spine and head begin to take shape, as do the arms, legs and eyes. Webbed structures are visible on the hands and feet, that will later become the toes and fingers. The development of the brain also continues.
- During the 6th week of pregnancy, the lungs, nose, jaw, and palate also begin to form.
- You may of or may not have morning sickness when your are 6 weeks pregnant.
Physical and psychological changes when you are into your 6th week or pregnancy
Fluctuations in weight are common and you may notice that you have either gained weight or lost some.
Some women may also experience mild cramps and light bleeding or spotting to be more accurate. This is not a sign of any problem but if you find yourself worried consult your gynecologist.
Recommended Tests when you are 6 weeks pregnant
- Rh Factor Test
- Vaginal sonogram
- TORCH test
- Blood sugar test
- TSH (Thyroid)
Some of these tests have already been recommended in pregnancy advice for previous weeks. If you have not yet conducted them you are advised to do so. These tests are meant to ascertain and ensure a normal pregnancy and delivery. Some of them are meant to detect the presence of any reproductive disease or condition that may be a concern.
Remedies, Precautions, Self Care during your 6th week of Pregnancy
- Continue with your exercising routine from the previous weeks, but do not switch to anything new, without consulting your doctor.
- Your dietary intake is extremely important. Make sure it is high in protein. Milk, cheese, soy and fish are some recommendations. You can have a bowl of fresh fruits for breakfast and a fruit juice with meals. Yogurt is important because of its high content of vitamin B6, so include it in your daily diet. Avoid foods that are fried or oily.
- In some women nausea is triggered by vitamin supplements, so you may try taking them either with your food, or shortly before going to bed. Don’t take them with citric juices however, as this can cause acidity.
6 Weeks Pregnant – Cautionary Note
Be wary of any intense itchiness and/or odor as they are two of the most common indicators of a vaginal infection. While spotting is not out of the normal, bleeding with a blood flow as during menstruation is a cause for concern. Any of these symptoms or occurrences should be brought to the notice of your gynecologist immediately.
This is a crucial period for your baby and extra care needs to be taken because your child’s internal organs are in their early stages of development, making them a lot more susceptible to external factors. Be very cautious with medications and avoid contact or any interaction with individuals suffering any communicable disease.

I am 6 weeks pregnant, but doctor could not locate anything on the ultrasound. Test carried by doc result shows that there are 80-90% chances of me being pregnant. Is it normal? If not what does this mean, do I have to take any care.

Usually, the USG (ultrasound), does not show anything by the 6th week of pregnancy. It is recommended, that you wait for the 8th or 9th week before getting another ultrasound done.
Did you get the UPT (urine pregnancy test) done? What did it reveal? Positive?
I would advice you to sit back and wait. Don’t panic. You have been examined and checked by your gynecologist, so wait for a few more weeks. Follow her instructions.

I did not get my periods for the last two months. I have mild pain in my abdomen sometimes. I often feel like the same pain and feeling like my periods would just start. What are the chances of me being pregnant? And is there any chance of me getting pregnant if my partner masturbated after having sex?

Please do urine test for pregnancy, if the result is positive it will give you a confirmation of pregnancy. You may also have weight gain, darkening of areola, abnormal craving for food, or mild cramps in legs.
If it is unprotected sex i.e. sex without any contraceptive, it may lead to pregnancy depending on your fertility cycle. Remember, even a single sperm in the vagina is enough to get a women pregnant.
