Broken Tooth Care | Oral Dental Hygiene | Oral Tooth Extraction

Question: My tooth, the very last one on right side at bottom, broke about 4months ago and only the root of my tooth is left in the gum. I know it needs to be removed as the gum is growing around it. How bad will this get? It does not hurt or bother me but what kind of other damage will it cause?

Answer:

Teeth are composed of the mineral calcium and are relatively very strong, but injury can cause the teeth to break.

How did the tooth break off?
Is there no pain?
Bleeding?
Are you diabetic?

Reasons could be:

Trauma
An underlying decay
Deficiency of calcium.

Anatomically, there is a nerve at the base of each tooth and if a large piece of the tooth is broken, it may leave the nerve exposed. There is no particular treatment for a broken tooth and it is imperative that you visit your dentist for a check up.

The broken tooth need not be a cause for concern, as long as it is asymptomatic, or doesn’t show any symptoms. You could leave it alone, but if you do not maintain good oral hygiene, infection is a probability.
