Question: I have very sensitive teeth. It has occurred due to vigorous brushing. The teeth are very sensitive to cold and hot things. What would you recommend?

Treatment and Management of Sensitive Teeth

• While brushing, do not be over zealous. Use a soft-bristled tooth brush, and use small circular, gentle movements. Try to avoid brushing your teeth from side to side.
• Change your toothbrush every three months, or sooner, if it gets worn out.
• For the moment, avoid foods that have extremes of temperature. Eat foods at room temperature.
• A visit to the dentists is definitely recommended. You need to have the dentist examine and assess the amount of damage done, to prevent an aggravation of the complaint. Your dentist will look for decayed teeth and root surfaces that have been exposed. He will perform certain tests and examinations to evaluate the degree of sensitivity.
• Do not put off going to the dentist, because you might need a Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic therapy) or you may require to have a de-sensitizing gel or a protecting – coating applied to your teeth immediately.
• The dentist may prescribe a stannous – fluoride gel or an over the counter de-sensitizing toothpaste that contains potassium nitrate and fluoride. These ingredients obstruct the transport of the sensations from the teeth to the nerves. Massaging the toothpaste / gel on to your gums, after brushing, will also prove to be beneficial
