Tooth decay is the decomposition of the structures of the tooth because of bacterial activity in the mouth. Bacteria produce acids that cause the tooth to turn black and fall-off. How to reverse tooth decay is a common question for children and adolescent.
Causes of Tooth Decay
There are four main factors that bring about tooth decay. Elimination of one of these factors will ensure a decay-free smile:
- Bacteria. They are normally present in mouth and feeds on food that they convert to sugar to produce acids that melts the enamel over time.
- Tooth. It is the site of tooth decay. The decay starts below the enamel leaving the latter strong and intact. It is weakened by acids produced by bacteria.
- Time. When the acid is constantly present in the mouth at a long period of time, holes in your teeth will surely ensue. Note that tooth decay is a gradual process.
- Sugar. These are converted by bacteria to acids that destroy the tooth enamel.
How to Reverse Tooth Decay Naturally
Tooth plaque or a minimal decay when left untreated will create holes on your teeth. Here are ways on how to prevent tooth decay:
- Remineralisation. This can be enhanced with the use of fluoride.Fluoride will inhibit demineralization of the crystal surfaces of the tooth and inhibit bacterial enzymes.
- Removal of plaque. These are collections of bacteria and sugar that will create decay. Good oral hygiene is important.
- Proper diet. Reduce your consumption of foods that contain high amount of sugar. Consume foods high in fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K). They are mostly found in plant-eating animals, shellfish, and wild fish.
- Stimulate your saliva flow. Saliva has properties that hinder the growth of bacteria. This can be done by consuming sugar-free gum or sucking on candies without sugar.
- Frequent visits to the dentist.
