Causes of Red Sore on Tongue
Having sores in the tongue area could be difficult and painful, and it usually interferes with your normal oral activities. This condition is medically termed as glossitis or the inflammation of the tongue. The condition is normally accompanied with swelling, soreness, and redness that varies from dark red to bright to pale redness of the tongue. There are several causes of red sores under tongue. Usually the redness of your tongue is a result of a health condition, disease, or some disorder. Some of the possible causes for tongue redness include:
- Health conditions that may include leukemia, tongue cancer, hypothyroidism, tumor in the pituitary gland, and anemia
- Sexually transmitted infections like syphilis, candida yeast infection, and oral herpes simplex.
- Disorders such as anxiety, depression, and burning mouth syndrome
- Unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking, excessive alcohol and spicy food intake, canker sores, and exposure to allergens and pollutants.
- Side effects of drug medication for diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and high blood pressure
- Hormonal and immune system adjustments
- Allergic reaction to mouthwash, toothpaste, and breath fresheners
Treatment, Prevention of Tongue Soreness
Red sores on tongue are basically symptoms that something is potentially wrong with you. Try to determine the cause of your tongue’s soreness, then avoid having contact with it. Knowing the cause of your sore tongue would effectively guide you towards treating it.
However, if the redness of your tongue is accompanied with difficulty in swallowing, eating and chewing, intolerable discomfort, and the redness of your sores exceeds for over a week, you should see your doctor immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment. Meanwhile, if the red sores on your tongue are quite tolerable, you should observe proper hygiene by brushing your teeth properly using gentle oral care products and eating a well-balanced diet.
