Question: I had esophageal hernia surgery 16 years ago, recently have had an oily taste or sensation in my mouth. It goes away when I eat. I am taking nexium, thought it would help, but does not seem to. What could cause this oily taste?
Answer: Taste disorder can arise to anyone, it may be related to some systemic condition or some time it may be related to our mind and appetite. Oily taste in mouth can be due to either eating oily and spicy food, it can be due to gastrointestinal reflux, or improper functioning of the liver.

Oily taste in mouth can be due to certain disease condition like:
- Hyperacidity
- Gastro esophageal reflux
- Upper respiratory tract infection.
- Sinusitis
- Liver disorders
- Gum and tooth disorders
- Hormonal disorders
- Taking certain medications
- Psychological conditions
- And some time it is idiopathic i.e. no oily taste with no pathological cause.

- Dental checkup
- Blood test for liver enzyme study
- Complete blood count to rule out anemia
- Cholesterol level
- Blood sugar level
- Uric acid to rule out gout
Treatment and Home Remedies for Oily Taste in Mouth
Systemic causes should be looked for and treated; besides this one can follow the steps given below.
- Maintain oral hygiene
- Drink plenty of water, and rinse your mouth with water after eating, drinking milk, tea coffee and milk products.
- Avoid alcohol and tobacco.
- Fresh mint juice mixed with water can be used as a mouthwash.
- Lime juice can be useful, you can drink lime juice twice in a day or you can rinse your mouth with it.
- Gargle with salt water twice in a day.
- Suck two to three clove of cardamom during the day, this will make your teeth strong and your mouth fresh.
