Canker sores or aphthous ulcers, are ulcers that affect the oral cavity and as associated with persistent pain. Canker sores are caused due to break in the mucous membrane, which can be a recurrent feature, especially when canker sores are present on the gums.

    Other gastrointestinal disorders like celiac disease can also result in canker sores
  • Hormonal imbalance and extreme emotional stress are closely linked with canker sores
  • Toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate have been known to cause canker sore.
  • Canker sores are also related with Vitamin and mineral deficiencies

Home Remedies For Canker Sores On Gums

Some of the most effective and simple home remedies for treatment of canker sores on gums include,

  • Salt water gargling is associated with profound benefits as it alleviates the pain and hastens the healing of the wounds. Adding half a teaspoon of baking soda to salt water further helps in destroying the bacteria and reducing inflammation.
  • Local application of hydrogen peroxide using cotton swab and gently dabbing it on the gum can help improve the canker sore. Ensure that you don’t swallow the solution and gargle with water after the application
  • Liquid suspension of milk of magnesia is found to be as effective as hydrogen peroxide. Milk of magnesia is associated with faster healing and lower risk in case it is swallowed

Treatment For Sores On Gums

  • Oral hygiene plays a crucial role in preventing canker sores. Regularly brushing your teeth, at least twice a day can prevent the occurrence of canker sores
  • Vitamin deficiencies are also associated with canker sores. Vitamin B12 supplements are essential to prevent canker sores on the gums.
  • Certain drugs are associated with canker sores. Corticosteroids and antibiotics can result in canker sores. Check with your physician about the medications and request for an alternative, if possible, in case your symptoms are severe.
