Burning Mouth Syndrome
The burning mouth syndrome usually feels like the burning of the mouth especially at tip of the tongue. It occurs mostly among women who are in their postmenopausal stage and ‘œsupertasters’ who have immense density of taste buds with surrounding pain fibers.
It is an inconvenient condition because it also leads to pain involving the lips and the sides of the mouth. In most cases, it is difficult to identify the direct reason, and no matter what amount of relief is sought, it is quite elusive.
Burning Sensation in Mouth Causes
Xerostomia or dryness of the mouth is identified as a cause of this syndrome.
Yeast infection in the mouth could also lead to this ailment. Other diseases that are associated with the oral burning sensation are:
- Stomach ulcers
- Diabetes
- Improper maintenance and use of dentures
- Soreness of the tongue caused by food allergy
The burning mouth syndrome is also an effect of some psychologically related conditions such as depression, anxiety, and fear. These strong emotions largely affect the brain neurons such that they malfunction and emit pain reactions that are felt by the mouth.
Poor nutrition is a major cause of this ailment. Fatty and spicy foods contribute a lot to the worsening of this condition. Deficiencies in the following nutrients damage the tongue tissues and the surrounding areas:
- Iron and zinc
- Vitamin B9, riboflavin, and pyridoxine
If you are using dentures, you are putting a lot of stress on your mouth tissues, which could lead to the burning sensation in your mouth. The materials of the dentures could be sources of irritation to your mouth or you are allergic to them.
Other major causes of this illness include neuropathy where the brain’s ability to control the taste and pain in the mouth is damaged. Allergies to certain food elements such as additives, food coloring, and flavors may result to it too.
Remedies for Burning Mouth Syndrome:
For immediate relief from burning mouth sensation, increase your daily dietary intake of iron, zinc, vitamin B9, riboflavin, and pyridoxine. Suck something sweet such as candies and something cold such as a small piece of ice. If you are wearing dentures, remove them.
