Prostatitis is inflammation of prostate. This can either acute (common) or chronic prostatitis. Signs and symptoms vary accordingly.
Acute prostatitis signs and symptoms -
- Infection in most cases is blood borne.
- The person feels ill, shivers, may have rigors, has aches all over, especially back and may easily be diagnosed as having influenza.
- The temperature may be up to 102degree Fahrenheit.
- Painful urination is common.
- The urine always contains threads in the first glass.
- Perineal heaviness, rectal irritation and pain on defecation can occur and sitting may be uncomfortable.
- Frequency to urination occurs when the infection spreads up to the bladder.
- Rectal examination reveals tender prostate.
Chronic prostatitis signs and symptoms-
- After irrigating urethra and massaging the prostate resultant specimen shows 15 or more pus cells per high power field.
- Acute or sub-acute epididymitis rarely occurs unless prostatitis is present.
- Pain- Local pain is a dull ache in the perineum or rectum.
- Referred pain- particularly common is low back pain, sometimes extending down the legs; such pain is usually attributed to lumbago and many sufferers from prostatitis receive treatment and physiotherapy for the same.
- Silent prostatitis – Arthritis, myositis, neuritis and sometimes iritis and conjunctivitis are on occasions explained only when pus has been obtained from the prostate.
- Recurring attacks of mild fever, lasting about 3 days and accompanied by malaise.
- Sexual dysfunction-
Premature ejaculation, prostatorrhea and impotence are sometimes due to prostatitis.
