Recovery after abdominal hysterectomy
After a complete abdominal hysterectomy can anyone tell me how long it takes
to recover and be back to normal?
[Health Adviser] Depending on your overall health, you may take 4-6 weeks
normally
[Health Adviser] But this really depends on various factors like your
health, any complications during the surgery etc. Once you feel strong, you
can get up and go around a bit. You must be slightly active to prevent any
clots forming or any pain due to gas. Do not lift anything heavy. Avoid
vaginal intercourse.
[Q] When can I go to work after I recover form abdominal hysterectomy?
[Health Adviser] That really depends on how well you recover and how fast.
If you have been moving around in the house and are able to do your regular
chores, you may want to try going outside for a walk. If you have started
driving, and do not feel pain or fatigue, you may want to spend a few hours
outside - maybe a garden, mall - to determine if you get tired. If all these
test results look ok, then you may be fit to go to work - this also dpends
on what kind of work you do. If it’s strenuous and physically demanding, you
must certainly check with your doctor. Abdominal hysterectomy patients
typically take 8-10 weeks for recovery - but like I mentioned earlier you
must keep in touch with your doctor at all stages and check with your doctor
if you should start working or wait for some more time to recover completely
from the hysterectomy surgery.
[Q] Thanks very much. This was indeed helpful. I will connect with my doctor
and take the next steps. It feels good to know these basic things before I
can talk to the doctor about my abdominal hysterectomy recovery stages. Very
eager to get back to work!
[Health Adviser] I am glad you found this information useful. Good Luck and
take care. Bye.
[Q] Bye.
