What causes loss of Voice and what is Laryngitis
Sore throat when associated with loss of voice or hoarseness of voice or difficulty in speaking, denotes inflammatory condition of the larynx or voice box in common language. Medically this condition is called as laryngitis.
Acute laryngitis is a short term for viral or bacterial throat infection. The causative factor is usually an attack of cold. It may also be caused by some other irritants which are very commonly consumed e.g. smoking, alcohol, etc.
Some people are prone to chronic inflammation of larynx or chronic laryngitis such as heavy smokers, singers, speakers or people who work in dusty environment.
Characteristic symptom is a hoarse voice or total loss of voice. Other symptoms include difficulty in swallowing and sore-throat.
Cure for loss of Voice
Advice voice rest and stoppage of smoking and drinking alcohol.
All irritating foods such as pickles, spices, cold water, curd, buttermilk are to be avoided.
Keep your-self as comfortable as possible with plenty of fluids, gargles, lozenges, pain relievers and rest.
Home remedies for sore-throat and loss of voice
- Inhale the vapors of hot water in which a few drops of eucalyptus oil have been added for about 10 minutes.
- Add some black pepper powder to a cup of warm milk and drink the mixture twice a day. A little sugar for taste can be added if desired.
- Sucking on a whole clove can quiet the throat tickles.
- Fresh juice of basil leaves (1/2 teaspoon) and (1 teaspoonful) of honey well mixed, should be taken 3 to 4 times a day.
- Steam inhalation of turmeric water can be taken. Add a pinch of turmeric powder to 15-20ml of water and boil.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Warm tea with honey is comforting for many people.
- Gargle several times a day with warm salt-water. Use 1/4th teaspoon salt in one half cup of warm water. This saline solution helps in reducing tissue swelling.
- Breathing through the nose sends a stream of warm, humidified air past your throat. Cooler, drier air breathed through the mouth can be irritating.
