Question: Is there any remedy for hydrocele without undergoing operation. I underwent operation before 5 years but now the problem occurred second time in two testes.

Answer:

What is Hydrocele?

Hydrocele is a painless swelling due to collection of watery fluid around testicles. The swelling occurs in the scrotal sac, where the testes are placed.  Generally the condition is not dangerous, except for the slight discomfort caused due to the accumulation of fluid causing the scrotal sac to increase in size.

Causes of Hydrocele

  • A Patent tunica vaginalis (a opening which normally closes before or shortly after birth), is the common cause among children.
  • Injury or surgery on the scrotal sac may also cause inflammation and swelling in the region.
  • Rarely hydrocele may occur with cancer of the testicle or the left kidney. There are very uncommon and occur in men older than the age of 50 years.

Treatment for Hydrocele

  • Simple aspiration of fluid using a needle can also be done.
However, it is not recommended considering the high risk of infection and recurrence.
  • Surgery is recommended if the hydrocele is too large, as it poises a threat of super-added infection.
  • Use scrotal support to reduce discomfort.
  • Homeopathic Remedy Pulsatilla 200, 6 pills, thrice a day will help reduce hydrocele swelling and avoid recurrence.

    USG report of both Testis:

The right and left testis measure 39.4 x 24.9 x 22.1 mms and 39.4 x 22.2 x 30.7 mms respectively. Both testis are normal in size, shape, outline and echotexture. The testicular vascularity is normal. No focal area of altered echogenecity is seen.
    The epididymis are normal.
    Both spermatic cords are normal.
Bilateral hydroceles are seen (more on right side). The fluid is anechoic and its upper limit is seen.
    IMPRESSION: Bilateral hydroceles

I am 24 years old. I have undergone surgery (Vericocelectomy) for left Vericocele 5 years ago. After that surgery, my left testes has doubled in size. I don’t have any pain in that area. I do physical exercises too. why is there a growth in size?
Is it the side effect of surgery, or am I suffering from Hydrocele?
I want to work on getting my left testis back to its normal size.
I do having frequent rashes problem on left side of my scrotum.

  3. DP

My Sonography report states the following:
    1) There is minimal right sided hydrocele.
    2) There is a simple cyst seen in right epydermis measuring 5 mm. The right spermatic cord appears bulky and echogenic with increased vascularity s/o funiculitis.
    3) There is a mild bulge seen in the right inguinal on valsalvas manouvre suspicious for early inguinal hernia.
What are your suggestions for treatment?

I am suffering from hydrocele of the left testicle since the last twenty years. Earlier ten years ago my left testicle was smaller in size now it has grown twice the size. Please advise whether it can be cured without surgery and if yes what are the names of the medicines that will cure the same or is it possible to inject the fluid out of the testicles by using a syringe?

  5. NA

I am 28yrs old. I have hydrocele of right testicle since long time, but from last 2-3 month it is uncomfortable and painful. Any remedies or prevention before going for surgery, and how many days I will have to take rest after surgery?

    • PUP

Hydrocele is a swelling in scrotal sac; it is the accumulation of watery fluid in the tunica vaginalis of the testes. It can be unilateral or bilateral (both the testes).
Hydrocele is not dangerous, unless it threatens the blood supply to the testicle, due to its large size. They come to the notice of an individual only due to its big size, or any discomfort.
Surgery is the best option if you are uncomfortable with the enlargement, and the pain.
The recovery time for full activity is couple of weeks after surgery. Although there will be some degree of swelling for one to two months after surgery.
Preventive measures you can follow or try before going for the last option of surgery:
      - Quit smoking and drinking if you are having the habit.
      - Use suspension bandage.
      - Treat the recurrent cough immediately.
      - Cold hip baths are beneficial, sit in a tub for few minutes.
      - Take preventive measures if you have constipation.

  6. P.U .P

Hydrocele is a collection of fluid in the tunica vaginalis, that is an outer covering of the testicle.
You are right, if the collection of fluid is excessive, than it hampers daily activity.

Cold hip baths are beneficial, advised to take twice in a day.
Suspender bandages are of good help, they have to be worn tightly over the scrotum.
Tobacco chewing or rather any form of tobacco or stimulants like tea coffee should avoided.

If the swelling is large in size and it is making daily life uncomfortable than surgery is preferable. It is a minor surgery.
But before that if you want to take alternative medicine, then homeopathy is helpful. Certain drugs in homeopathy work wonders in such cases.

  7. Salina

Hydrocele (a collection of fluid in the tunica vaginalis or the sac-like structure that envelops the testicle) is quite a common disorder in males.

    Clinical presentation:

It usually presents as a smooth and a painless enlargement of the scrotum.
Only, if the accumulated fluid gets infected, then, pain occurs.
Are you in to heavy weight training?
Do you lift excessive weights, at the gym or otherwise?
    How large is the swelling?
    Are you experiencing any discomfort?
    Which testicle is affected?
Has there ever been any injury to that part?
How long has the swelling been there?
Have you been examined by a physician?
(If you could provide these details, I could help you better)

    Management:
    1. Cold hip baths have proved to be particularly beneficial in the management of hydrocele. A 10 minute bath, twice a day is recommended.
    2. Suspensory bandage is often useful.
    3. Avoid stimulants like tea, coffee, alcohol, and tobacco.

    Watch out! :
    1. Avoid overstraining. Do not lift unnecessary and excessive weights. This will further aggravate the condition.
    2. Any practice that would lower the tone of the body tissues should be avoided. Light exercises to tone up are advised.
    3. Ensure that you do not raise the intra-abdominal pressure, by not treating a chronic cough, straining at stool, or by un-checked diarrhoea or vomiting.

    Surgical intervention:
The surgical procedure that is resorted to, is tapping of the accumulated fluid in the sac.
It is a minor surgery that becomes necessary in case the swelling continues to enlarge constantly, it causes too much discomfort while walking, or when the fluid gets infected.
    Homoeopathy:
Homoeopathy brings about a general well-being.
Silicea, a homoeopathic remedy, helps to reduce the swelling of the scrotum by absorbing the fluid. It will also halt a further enlargement, and prevent an infection from occurring.

  8. Hydrocele is the collection of fluid in a sac. Testicular hydrocele is collection of such fluid in scrotal sac i.e. the covering skin for testicles. The reasons could be: trauma, gonorrheal infection or some systemic causes like heart enlargement,

Many people stay comfortably with it for a long time. It becomes uncomfortable only if the size increases. The best and permanent option for testicular hydrocele is surgery. However, for any reason if you do not want to go for surgery, water treatment i.e. Cold hip baths, hot Epsom salt bath, wearing suspension bandage is often useful.

  9. S

I am 30 years old, found enlargement in left side testes. This enlargement, I found when I was about 10 years of age. I consulted at that time with doctor he told me since this is not a problem, no treatment is required. Even now there is no pain in that enlarged testes and no pain in belly.
Is this Hydrocele or anything else. Are there any side effects of hydrocele surgery or is it a common surgery or quite risky?
