Dry Cough Home Remedies | Causes and Prevention of Dry Cough

Cough is a defensive mechanism of clearing the airways of mucous, foreign body, irritants or some type of blockage. Coughs are often accompanied by colds and other airways infections. Bronchial cough is tight and painful. A sinus infection generally drips mucous down the throat, producing cough. Croupy cough produce a loud raspy sound, bringing up phlegm with difficulty. Damage of the lung tissue due to pneumonia can produce chronic cough. Chronic smoker’s also have chronic cough. Cough may be caused by inflammation of the larynx or the pharynx. A cough can develop in the chest due to change in weather or seasonal changes.

How to Stop Dry Cough

  • Certain food articles which are known to cause catarrh are white bread, meat, sugar, porridge, puddings and pies during winter, should be avoided.
  • When suffering from cold, keep the nose and mouth clean. This will tend to keep the infection from going down in the lungs.
  • Add half a teaspoon of salt to half a liter of water, warm it and sniff it up the nose or use it as nasal drops (3 to 4 drops in each nostril). Repeat as many times as you want.
  • Gargle your throat with this water to avoid secretion and thus prevent cough.
  • Avoid overuse of voice when you have cough.

Natural Remedies for Dry Cough

  • Mix equal amount of lemon juice and honey with little cayenne. Make this into tea form and take one teaspoon 3 to 4 times a day or as and when required.
  • Mix thick flaxseed tea with 1 to 2 drops of eucalyptus oil and drink it slowly so that the throat (pharynx and tonsils) is painted with it.
  • Grapes are very useful in treating cough. A cup of grape juice is mixed with a teaspoon of honey and taken 3 to 4 times in a day. This helps relieve dry cough. For cough with expectoration, simple grape juice should be taken.
  • Onions are used since olden days for relieving cough. Onions should be finely chopped and juice is extracted from it. One part of it is added to one part of honey and stored in bottle for 4 to 5 hours. Drink it as cough syrup, two teaspoons two times in a day.

Coughing is the action by which excess mucus is thrown out and hacking sound is produced. When the membranes of the lungs are infected and inflamed the lining of air passage is irritated and secretion of mucous increases.

Symptoms of Cough
The person draws a deep breath in, then suddenly discharges air which travels through the air passage and carries with it excess secretions and foreign matter. It is a defense mechanism and ejects germs, foreign bodies from lungs and windpipe.

Causes of Cough

  • Inflammation of the larynx or pharynx and even digestive disturbances can cause cough.
  • Weather condition or seasonal changes may develop a cough in the chest.
  • Wrong feeding habits can clog bronchial tube with waste matter, which is the real cause.

Home remedies for Cough

  • In case of mild cough, the patient can begin with an all fruit diet for 5-7 days.
  • Drink plain water or unsweetened lemon water. Then begin with a well-balanced diet.
  • In case of severe cough, the patient should fast on water and orange juice till severity is reduced.
  • Grape relieves simple cold and cough when used for a couple of days, and it is specially used for cough in combination with honey.
  • Juice extracted from onion when mixed with honey and kept for 4-5 hours makes excellent cough syrup.
  • Tea made from aniseed should be taken regularly to break mucous in hard, dry cough.
  • For dry cough, soak almonds in water for 1 hour and ground-well with sugar and butter.Take this in the morning and evening.
  • Grind raisins with water, mix with sugar and heat it to form a sauce. 20gms of this should be taken daily at bedtime.
  • Roast root of turmeric and powder it. 3 grams should be taken twice a day to relieve dry cough.
  • Mixture of herb myroblan, honey and pepper is good for cough.
