What Causes Blood In The Stool | Home Remedies And Prevention

Question: I have seen a blood in the stool after the interval of 15-20 days. I saw first day a blood drops with the stool and on 2nd day a black clots with the stool, pleas assess my problem, and let me know what causes blood in the stool, also if you can suggest me treatment about my illness, it would be great.

Answer: Invariably, hemorrhoids/ piles produce rectal bleeding.  Piles are a very common dysfunction of the alimentary system, which is accompanied by bleeding. Piles occur when the blood vessels (veins) get engorged and protrude.

A ruptured blood vessel bleeds.

I need to enquire about a few things before I can say for certain what it is you are suffering from?

  • Since how many days is the bleeding?
  • Is the bleeding always dark and clotted/ are there drops of bright red blood?
  • Do you suffer from constipation? Do you have to strain at stool?
  • Piles are a common disorder of the digestive system, which is accompanied by bleeding. The above questions pertain to piles.
  • Is there any nausea or vomiting? Any abdominal pain?

This is to rule out gastritis or ulcers.  Other causes could be a fissure (crack) in the rectum, which results in bleeding when passing stool or it could be a polyp.

Home Remedies For Blood In The Stool

For any of the above disorders, the essential and only way to manage is through a proper diet.

Restructuring your diet is the crucial aspect to any digestive disorder.

  • Avoid spicy foods.
  • Avoid stimulants – tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, smoking, soft drinks.
  • In case of constipation, have 2 spoons of psyllium seeds soaked in warm milk every night before going to sleep. This adds bulk to the stool and aids in easy passage. Never stain too much at stool.
  • Drink at least 3 litres water every day. Water enhances the bowel motility.
  • Let soups, salads, fruits be the mainstay of your diet.
  • Non-vegetarian food can be consumed in moderation. About once or twice week. But, it should be boiled/grilled. Not fried.
  • The most important food remedy is dry figs. Soak them overnight in water and consume them the next morning. Figs improve peristalsis (movement of the digestive organs)
  • And finally, don’t get too stressed out.

Follow the dietary guidelines without fail and see if the bleeding abates. If not, a few investigations need to be done.
