Symptoms of Typhoid Fever: Cure, Causes and Treatment of Typhoid

Typhoid Fever is characterized by typical course of temperature and ulceration of the bowels. The fever is of uncertain duration and is infectious.

Symptoms of Typhoid Fever

  • The patient feels weak, cold and tired.
  • Headache, backache, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite are other symptoms.
  • Temperature rises and remains high for about 10-14 days. Body  temperature typically rises in the evening and drops in the morning.
  • Skin eruptions appear, tongue becomes dry and gets white patches in the center, which causes oily taste in mouth and inflamed bones.
  • Fever comes down gradually by the end of fourth week.

Causes of Typhoid Fever

  • Poor sanitation, contaminated water and infected milk are some of the main factors responsible for typhoid.
  • Flies contaminate the food with germs. People carrying the germs can also spread the disease if they prepare or serve food.
  • Wrong dietary habits and faulty lifestyle lead to accumulation of toxic waste in the body and promotes typhoid fever.
  • Typhoid is common in people who eat more meat and meat products.

Natural Remedies for Typhoid Fever

  • Complete bed rest is essential.
  • Patient should be kept on a liquid diet of orange, barley juice and milk. Orange juice, especially, hastens recovery as it increases energy, promotes body immunity and increases urinary output.
    Administer warm water enema regularly.
  • Apply cold compress to the forehead if temperature rises above 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Alternatively, wrap the body and legs twice with a sheet wrung in cold water and then cover it with a warm material. The pack should be kept for an hour and renewed after every 3 hours. Hot water bottles may be applied to the sides of the body and feet.
  • Fresh fruits and easily digestible foods can be given after once the fever subsides and body temperature comes down to normal.
  • Plain water or unsweetened lemon water can be used for drinking.
  • Gradually start a well-balanced diet.

Prevention of Typhoid Fever

Implementation of anti-fly measures, proper disposal of sewage, boiling or thorough purification of drinking water and pasteurization of milk are some of the preventive measures.

Typhoid Fever Questions and Answers

I was diagnosed with viral fever by my local doctor. After 4 days when the fever did not  subside, my doctor asked me to get a blood test done as he is suspecting typhoid.

[A] You must most certainly follow your doctor’s advice and get your blood check up done to detect what the problem is – whether its typhoid fever or something else

Question: About a week ago I was suffering from constipation & stomach ache with occasional fever. Last 2 days,  I have continuous fever of around 99-100 degree F. My widal test (not from reputed lab ) is +ve.

Answer: Since the Widal test has been done and the result has been positive, your diagnosis is typhoid. Diet and hygiene will play an important role in your treatment.
Here are a few home remedies for treating typhoid:

* Drink 2 tall glasses of warm milk to which Psyllium seeds have been added. Psyllium seeds help in the easy and smooth passage of stools and check constipation.
* To settle a disturbed stomach, drink 2 tender coconut water everyday. Coconut water is alkaline and rich in essential nutrients.
* To battle fatigue and exhaustion, eat 5 dates daily. Soak them overnight in water and eat the next day. Dates provide great strength and vigor.
* Stomach pain can be relieved by consuming a mixture of 1 spoon cumin seed powder and 1 spoon of powdered sugar.
* In order to manage fluctuating temperatures, drink raisin water. Raisins are an excellent tonic during fevers. Avoid popping anti-pyretics.
* Avoid foods which derange and upset the stomach. Stay away from spicy food, tea, coffee, aerated drinks, refined foods and alcohol.
* Increase your fluid intake to prevent typhoid.

Control Typhoid:

* Take rest for a period of 1 week. Your body needs to recover and recuperate.
* Drink boiled and filtered water only.
* Wash hands and feet thoroughly.
* Always keep food in covered containers.
* Eat steaming hot food.

Hey my friend had typhoid. Blood tests have shown that he doesn’t have it anymore. But now he has an ecoli kidney infection and it seems like the ecoli has got into his blood stream. Can typhoid cause this or put a hole in his intestine?

E.coli may be a fresh infection in itself. It may not have any relation with typhoid, which is caused by salmonella typhi bacteria. But if his immune system has not recovered fully, he may be susceptible to other infections.

Hey I had a question for anyone on here, how long does Typhoid actually stay in peoples bodies?

I am reading a lot about people having typhoid for 2 year or for 10years. But how can the virus survive/ last so long?

When I had talked to the nurse from the health department, she claims that after 6 months the virus just dies itself. Typhoid cannot stay so long in the body.

So it doesn’t make sense to me that all these people are still suffering from typhoid after so many years. Either they are getting wrong treatment / medicine or they could have permanent organ damage from the virus.

Typhoid is known to cause permanent organ damage around the 3rd/4week of first exposure. Especially if left untreated or not treated properly.

I don’t believe a lot of these people who claim they still have typhoid after so many years. i think at the time they had typhi, the virus probably gave them permanent organ damage and or permanently messed up their system, that’s why they have all these symptoms.

Hi. I went through typhoid from 25 October to 5 November. Keeping your body well hydrated is one of the best ways to get quick riddance of typhoid. Always keep a bottle of warm water near your bed. Whenever you feel thirsty and dry drink plenty of water. Don’t subject your body to fast movements. Put on socks always, covering your body with bed sheet and sweating gives a large relief.

I had Typhoid for 6 days. If undiagnosed it can be fatal. These days due to swine flu everybody is scared. My recommendation is don’t ignore any FEVER.

I was taking viral fever tablets from a good doctor, not knowing the fact that I had Typhoid. I came to know this thing after 2 days when the fever was not coming down below 102 c.
I felt very weak, had diarrhea, felt cold all of a sudden, did not feel like eating anything.

After getting my blood tests from Doctor, it was diagnosed that I had Typhoid. I was given proper vaccination a hospital. It was in liquid form, going in my body through my veins, twice a day for 3 days (depends from person to person and your doctors prescription). Typhoid fever does not go down in one day even if you are taking medicines. You have to be patient, eventually the medicines will work.

I took proper rest, forced myself to eat lots of fruits, juices, Dalia etc.

ALL the BEST for a HEALTHY LIFE

I have 99 c to 100 c temp. It rises in evening and and decreases in morning without any medicine. I started my antibiotic course for 10 days on 13th July 2009. But after the course fever remained at 99 c. I was hospitalized on 26 July 2009 and treated with Monocef injection 1 gm twice and discharged on 31 July 2009. And continued the antibiotic for up to 4 Aug 2009. But my body temperature rises to 99 c in the evening and goes back to normal in morning. All reports are normal, i.e. mx test, blood culture, urine culture, pcr tuberclosis test. My appetite is normal. Do you have any suggestions for typhoid natural treatment or diagnosing my problem.

I was suffering from this fever. I took complete bed rest for 4 days. At first, there was a lot of weakness, pain in the joints and headache. I was not able to sleep for days due to pain. I was not able to eat either. Temperature runs so high that I feel like removing all clothes. Sometimes, I was shivering during peak summer. To counter loss of appetite ate sweets prepared from concentrated milk with sugar. That helped me a lot as it gave me enough energy to fight acidity & digest the medicines. I recovered from the fever within 5 days.

The lab result showed I was Typhoid positive. For three weeks now, I have severe back pains, stomach problems, headaches, body heat, lack of appetite, insomnia and pain in the region behind my chest. But I lost about 5 pounds, lost some hair and feel very tired all the time. I started feeling better about a few weeks. I recovered by eating fresh fruits and drinking fruit juices. I avoided oily and junk food.
