Symptoms of Typhoid Fever: Cure, Causes and Treatment of Typhoid

Typhoid Fever is characterized by typical course of temperature and ulceration of the bowels. The fever is of uncertain duration and is infectious.

Symptoms of Typhoid Fever

  • The patient feels weak, cold and tired.
  • Headache, backache, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite are other symptoms.
  • Temperature rises and remains high for about 10-14 days. Body  temperature typically rises in the evening and drops in the morning.
  • Skin eruptions appear, tongue becomes dry and gets white patches in the center, which causes oily taste in mouth and inflamed bones.
  • Fever comes down gradually by the end of fourth week.

Causes of Typhoid Fever

  • Poor sanitation, contaminated water and infected milk are some of the main factors responsible for typhoid.
  • Flies contaminate the food with germs. People carrying the germs can also spread the disease if they prepare or serve food.
  • Wrong dietary habits and faulty lifestyle lead to accumulation of toxic waste in the body and promotes typhoid fever.
  • Typhoid is common in people who eat more meat and meat products.

Natural Remedies for Typhoid Fever

  • Complete bed rest is essential.
  • Patient should be kept on a liquid diet of orange, barley juice and milk. Orange juice, especially, hastens recovery as it increases energy, promotes body immunity and increases urinary output.
    Administer warm water enema regularly.
  • Apply cold compress to the forehead if temperature rises above 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Alternatively, wrap the body and legs twice with a sheet wrung in cold water and then cover it with a warm material. The pack should be kept for an hour and renewed after every 3 hours. Hot water bottles may be applied to the sides of the body and feet.
  • Fresh fruits and easily digestible foods can be given after once the fever subsides and body temperature comes down to normal.
  • Plain water or unsweetened lemon water can be used for drinking.
  • Gradually start a well-balanced diet.

Prevention of Typhoid Fever

Implementation of anti-fly measures, proper disposal of sewage, boiling or thorough purification of drinking water and pasteurization of milk are some of the preventive measures.

Typhoid Fever Questions and Answers

I was diagnosed with viral fever by my local doctor. After 4 days when the fever did not  subside, my doctor asked me to get a blood test done as he is suspecting typhoid.

[A] What symptoms are you facing for typhoid fever?
[Q] I have Headache and fever, but commonly occurs at night, temperature not more than 101 degree and irritation in eyes plus tiredness and fatigue.
[A] And how many days do you have the fever for?
[Q] About 4 days with sputum in chest.
[A] How is your appetite? Do you have any appetite?
[Q] My appetite seems to be ok; I don’t have a problem there.

[A] Do you have constipation?
[Q] No constipation.
[A] It’s tough to diagnose this remotely. What exactly are you looking for? Do you want to know some home remedies for typhoid? Do you want to know about typhoid symptoms?
[A] You must most certainly follow your doctor’s advice and get your blood check up done to detect what the problem is – whether its typhoid fever or something else
[A] Here are some home remedies I can suggest – but use them only after you have consulted your doctor:

  • Take a lot of rest
  • Cold compress if your fever goes over 103
  • Drink more water; even orange juice will be good as that will give you more energy
  • Stick to easily digestible foods – liquid diet is good if you can tolerate it.
  • Warm eater enema may also be administered for some people during typhoid fever.

Question: About a week ago I was suffering from constipation & stomach ache with occasional fever. Last 2 days,  I have continuous fever of around 99-100 degree F. My widal test (not from reputed lab ) is +ve.

Answer: Since the Widal test has been done and the result has been positive, your diagnosis is typhoid. Diet and hygiene will play an important role in your treatment.
Here are a few home remedies for treating typhoid:

* Drink 2 tall glasses of warm milk to which Psyllium seeds have been added. Psyllium seeds help in the easy and smooth passage of stools and check constipation.
* To settle a disturbed stomach, drink 2 tender coconut water everyday. Coconut water is alkaline and rich in essential nutrients.
* To battle fatigue and exhaustion, eat 5 dates daily. Soak them overnight in water and eat the next day. Dates provide great strength and vigor.
* Stomach pain can be relieved by consuming a mixture of 1 spoon cumin seed powder and 1 spoon of powdered sugar.
* In order to manage fluctuating temperatures, drink raisin water. Raisins are an excellent tonic during fevers. Avoid popping anti-pyretics.
* Avoid foods which derange and upset the stomach. Stay away from spicy food, tea, coffee, aerated drinks, refined foods and alcohol.
* Increase your fluid intake to prevent typhoid.

Control Typhoid:

* Take rest for a period of 1 week. Your body needs to recover and recuperate.
* Drink boiled and filtered water only.
* Wash hands and feet thoroughly.
* Always keep food in covered containers.
* Eat steaming hot food.

I have been battling with this disease for over a decade now. I fall sick and doctors will always tell me I have Malaria and Typhoid. My symptoms are always severe. My symptoms starts with a headache, fever, body ache, body heat, loss of appetite, dizziness and an upset stomach. Recently, I was rushed to a hospital in terrible condition. My stomach was hurting a lot, I was short of breath, had a terrible body ache. Suddenly, I threw up and was relieved. I also have chest pains sometimes but that gets relieved with Antacid. I am hypertensive and on medications regularly. I try to keep my Blood Pressure under control naturally, but I do not think it is good enough.
I had a test done and was told I am HBV positve, did an LFT test and was confirmed OK and now undergoing HE AG test.

I was suffering from typhoid fever for 2 weeks with high temperature (103-104) all the time. When I consulted my physician, he asked me get a blood test done for typhoid. The results are:
    typhi.o :1:160
    typhi.H :1:120

After seeing the report he confirmed that I was suffering from typhoid. He gave me MONOCEF-O tablets which I took twice a day. I took complete bed rest for 4 weeks.

But I lost about 5 pounds, lost some hair and feel very tired all the time. I started feeling better about a few weeks. I recovered by eating fresh fruits and drinking fruit juices. I avoided oily and junk food.

The lab result showed I was Typhoid positive. For three weeks now, I have severe back pains, stomach problems, headaches, body heat, lack of appetite, insomnia and pain in the region behind my chest. I have tested for ulcer, and was found negative. I had hepatitis-B about 3 years ago which recurred last year.

I was suffering from this fever. I took complete bed rest for 4 days. At first, there was a lot of weakness, pain in the joints and headache. I was not able to sleep for days due to pain. I was not able to eat either. Temperature runs so high that I feel like removing all clothes. Sometimes, I was shivering during peak summer. To counter loss of appetite ate sweets prepared from concentrated milk with sugar. That helped me a lot as it gave me enough energy to fight acidity & digest the medicines. I recovered from the fever within 5 days.

I am suffering from typhoid but this typhoid is of other type. The report says on 13 July 2009
    typhi.o :1:80
    typhi.H :1:80

I have 99 c to 100 c temp. It rises in evening and and decreases in morning without any medicine. I started my antibiotic course for 10 days on 13th July 2009. But after the course fever remained at 99 c. I was hospitalized on 26 July 2009 and treated with Monocef injection 1 gm twice and discharged on 31 July 2009. And continued the antibiotic for up to 4 Aug 2009. But my body temperature rises to 99 c in the evening and goes back to normal in morning. All reports are normal, i.e. mx test, blood culture, urine culture, pcr tuberclosis test. My appetite is normal. Do you have any suggestions for typhoid natural treatment or diagnosing my problem.

I had Typhoid for 6 days. If undiagnosed it can be fatal. These days due to swine flu everybody is scared. My recommendation is don’t ignore any FEVER.

I was taking viral fever tablets from a good doctor, not knowing the fact that I had Typhoid. I came to know this thing after 2 days when the fever was not coming down below 102 c.
I felt very weak, had diarrhea, felt cold all of a sudden, did not feel like eating anything.

After getting my blood tests from Doctor, it was diagnosed that I had Typhoid. I was given proper vaccination a hospital. It was in liquid form, going in my body through my veins, twice a day for 3 days (depends from person to person and your doctors prescription). Typhoid fever does not go down in one day even if you are taking medicines. You have to be patient, eventually the medicines will work.

I took proper rest, forced myself to eat lots of fruits, juices, Dalia etc.

ALL the BEST for a HEALTHY LIFE

Hi. I went through typhoid from 25 October to 5 November. Keeping your body well hydrated is one of the best ways to get quick riddance of typhoid. Always keep a bottle of warm water near your bed. Whenever you feel thirsty and dry drink plenty of water. Don’t subject your body to fast movements. Put on socks always, covering your body with bed sheet and sweating gives a large relief.

Hey I had a question for anyone on here, how long does Typhoid actually stay in peoples bodies?

I am reading a lot about people having typhoid for 2 year or for 10years. But how can the virus survive/ last so long?

When I had talked to the nurse from the health department, she claims that after 6 months the virus just dies itself. Typhoid cannot stay so long in the body.

So it doesn’t make sense to me that all these people are still suffering from typhoid after so many years. Either they are getting wrong treatment / medicine or they could have permanent organ damage from the virus.

Typhoid is known to cause permanent organ damage around the 3rd/4week of first exposure. Especially if left untreated or not treated properly.

I don’t believe a lot of these people who claim they still have typhoid after so many years. i think at the time they had typhi, the virus probably gave them permanent organ damage and or permanently messed up their system, that’s why they have all these symptoms.

Hey my friend had typhoid. Blood tests have shown that he doesn’t have it anymore. But now he has an ecoli kidney infection and it seems like the ecoli has got into his blood stream. Can typhoid cause this or put a hole in his intestine?

    • PUP

E.coli may be a fresh infection in itself. It may not have any relation with typhoid, which is caused by salmonella typhi bacteria. But if his immune system has not recovered fully, he may be susceptible to other infections.

  26. R V

Blood result shown typhoid as -ve. But white cells count is less than normal. Doctor says it is sometimes happen that typhoid may not be traced but it is symptom of typhoid. Is it true? A patient suffered with Dengue fever 6 months back and now has the above condition. Please advise.

  27. S K

I am suffering from typhoid from a week first time, I suffered from fever 103 temperature in my school, so my parents took me to home and in home also my temperature rises to 105, then I my doctor gave ranitidine injection and gave azithral tablets.

My father is having problem like swelling of muscular parts [other than the joints] of fingers. And he is having pain in his knee, backbone and others joints. Sometimes the pain is extreme. No other symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting is seen. But he is feeling some weakness nowadays. He is 47 years old. I am extremely worried about his health. Kindly suggest me what medications is helpful for my father.

    • PUP

Before starting any medical treatment, your father needs a complete medical checkup. Blood investigations such as Blood sugar, ESR, CBC, RA test, etc are some of the test to be performed. This will help to diagnose the cause.

Hi there, I want to say thanks for everyone providing information. I find this info about the Typhoid very helpful.

I have some questions about typhoid, as I am confused myself about it.

Is typhoid a Virus, Bacteria, or Disease? If typhoid can relapse and people can still suffer from typhoid or typhoid symptoms after years, wouldn’t the conclusion of typhoid be that it is just a living virus? And what effects does typhoid have on the body? (Besides fever)

My brother has been suffering from typhoid since June 2010, the doctors said he was fine and cured.(around August/September) blood tests/urine tests are showing up negative.

Now he thinks something might be stuck in his vessel, around the first of September. When he still had typhi, he was outside in the heat and claimed to have had a stroke. The CT scan provided info that his brain was ok.

Now another doctor is saying that it’s possible that he could have had an Internal Hemorrhage due to the typhoid fever.

My question is. Does typhoid cause bacteria or microbes to get stuck in your vessels causing blood flow blockage? My brother never drunk or smoked and was very athletic before he caught typhoid. So plague build up would be unlikely. He just said it feels like something is stuck and crawling around his vessel. Could anyone help me and answer my questions? Kaccee

    • PUP

Typhoid is caused by salmonella typhi bacteria. Typhoid is a bowel disease. Typhoid bacteria do not get stuck in your blood vessels to cause blockage. He should take vitamin supplements and diet rich in vitamins. Tell him to eat green leafy vegetables, fruits along with normal routine food. It will provide natural vitamins which will boost his immune system.

  30. Y K

Dear, there may be possibility of psychological problem or another symptoms of other disease. Please consult a top physician for further treatment and if you have not done CT scan, then please consult a neuro-physician, Hoping for quick recovery to your brother’s health.

I still believe that many doctors should learn and educate themselves about the typhoid fever, especially USA doctors. Years ago me, my wife, and daughter went on vacation to Brazil. I am a 45 years. When we came back from our trip, my daughter was vomiting, running fever and had nose bleeds. This was all uncontrollable. I rushed her to the hospital as they immediately gave her iv fluid. Doctors kept assuming she had aids or asked all kinds of uncivilized questions if she was sexually active with other males/females. My daughter was only 12. It made me mad. Then 4 days later they confirmed that she had typhoid fever.

Even though typhoid is not very common in USA. it is still a threat because many USA travelers can bring back the disease and not even know it. So USA doctors should be more informed and intelligent about the situation. Then after a week in the hospital, the doctor said that my daughter was cured. 20days later she had a relapse.

It was a hassle. I am just glad my daughter is fine now.

  32. A R

I was having fever. Initially the doctor thought of it as a viral fever and gave meds for it. But when the fever didn’t go down even after 5-6 days, a blood test was conducted showing that I have typhoid. I had finished the medicine course for the viral fever and the doc now gave me meds for typhoid. Surprisingly, the fever subsided the day my blood test was conducted and never rose above 100. It is my second week. I am not feeling weak or anything. I am perfectly healthy with no typhoid like symptoms. However, my body temperature fluctuates around 99 and sometimes I feel that my body temperature has risen although I don’t have anybody pain, weakness or other fever like symptoms. I don’t even feel cold although its late December now. Is this normal? Am I alright and can I resume with my studies and all?? I am on leave at present and my college is in another city far away. Please provide some suggestions. Thank you.

  33. S N

My daughter is suffering from high fever since 6 days. After blood test she was diagnosed typhoid. She has been taking oflaxin 400 since 4 days. She is feeling very weak and has lost her appetite, Suggest the diet, she is still running fever 101-103. Is she on safe medicine?

  34. W L

Typhoid should be ruled out as one of the most deadliest diseases. one thing I do not understand about typhoid is how it can lurk in peoples bodies for years. Malaria, cholera, dengue are all deadly but once they are cured, they are cured. it’s not like typhoid spreadable and contagious. it’s like there is no true cure for typhoid.

I talked to a doctor from the east coast. He told me there wasn’t a true cure for typhoid fever. He said that typhoid was just as living parasite that stayed in your body and the only point of IV fluids, antibiotics, and staying hydrated was to clean out all the bacteria. Medical researchers should do more research and investigate how to truly cure typhoid fever.

I guess the only option is to surgically remove the spleen or gall bladder.

  35. Q P

I do have a question, if typhoid doesn’t block vessels or veins. Then how can typhoid fever cause kidney failure? A man I knew had typhoid and had kidney failure. I know if a vessel is blocked it can cause kidney failure.

  36. S P

I have 99 c to 100 C temp, It rises in evening and decreases in morning without any medicine. I started my antibiotic course for 10 days. But after the course fever remained at 99, continued the antibiotic for up 1 month.

But my body temperature rises to 99 c in the evening and goes back to normal in morning. All reports are normal, i.e. mx test, blood culture, urine culture. My appetite is normal. Do you have any suggestions for typhoid natural treatment or diagnosing my problem?
