What is Toenail Fungus

Nail infections caused by fungal molds are called Toenail Fungus. They arrive unannounced. Initially spots may appear on the nail then months later, fungi may consume the whole nail. The nail may become brittle and crack as the infection advances.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungus

• Nail becomes white or yellow after thickening, discoloring and drying.
• The skin surrounding the nails scale.
• Swelling or blistering around the nail that maybe accompanied by pain while standing, walking or running.
• In rare, severe cases nail gets detached from the nail bed.

What Causes Toenail Fungus

• Nail infections are caused by fungal molds called dermatophytes.
• They are common in people who have infections of the skin adjoining the nails.
• Warm moist environment encourage the spread of skin infections
• Trauma to the nails – by regular distance runners, people wearing tight fitting shoes who stand continuously for a long time
• People with compromised immune systems from HIV, AIDS and chemotherapy are also affected.

Tea tree oil, vinegar, camphor phenol paste and saline solution can be applied with a soft brush.

Preventing Toenail Fungus

1. Use only disinfected manicure and pedicure tools, which have been wiped with alcohol and air-dried for 60-90 minutes.
2. Daily wash your hands and legs with soap and water and dry them well, especially between the toes.
3. Cut your nails straight and see that they do not extend beyond the tips of your toes and fingers.
4. Wear cotton socks and leather shoes that provide plenty of toe room, and in warm weather wear sandals.
5. Use anti-fungal foot powder.
