Staph Infection or Boil

  • Boil is a deep seated infection of the hair follicle around hair root. Boil is called as furuncle in medical language.
  • The causative organism is most often staphylococcus aureus.
  • It is frequently found around hairy areas of the body, especially those which are subjected to friction and pressure.
  • Boils are painful. It starts as a firm nodule but softens and ruptures after a few days discharging pus.
    In people with repeated episodes of boils, search for underlying cause has to be done with help of investigations to rule out diabetes mellitus, blood dyscrasias, chronic nephritis and immune deficiency.
  • Boils can also be a presenting feature due to poor general health and malnourishment.

Prevention of Staph Infection or Boil

  • Maintain a well balanced diet with more use of whole-grain cereals, raw vegetables and fresh fruits.
  • Person should avoid tea, coffee, sugary foods especially cakes, pastries, chocolates, pickles, spicy and oily foods.
  • Avoid picking over the boil before it matures.
  • Warm moist compresses should be applied three times a day over the boil. This will help the boil to head up i.e. the pus portion will come at the top. This will encourage drainage.

Home Remedies and Natural Cures for Staph Infection and Boil

Commonly used home remedies for boils are garlic, onions, and turmeric and cumin seeds.

  • The juice of garlic made by crushing or pounding 3-4 cloves of garlic should be applied over the boil externally. It helps ripening of boils and easy drainage of pus. Garlic is also helpful for treatment of nephritis
  • Application of turmeric powder over boils speeds up its healing process.
  • Similarly, onion juice can be applied externally over the boils for quick pus drainage.
  • Cumin seeds are also beneficial. It has to be grounded in water and the paste thus prepared should be applied over boils.
  • Warm leaves of betel leaves smeared with castor oil can be applied locally on boils.
