What Is Spondylosis? | Symptoms and Treatment of Spondylosis

Question: A year back, I fell on my back and injured the 6th dorsal. Now when I go for my walks, movement of head sideways and up-down causes intense vertigo.  It stabilizes if I hold my head in a constant position, looking in front. I also get intense back pain, if I sit or walk for long.  Please suggest homeopathic remedies. Thank you.

What Is Spondylosis and its Symptoms

  • The symptoms you’ve provided me with (backache, vertigo, and a history of trauma), are suggestive of spondylosis.
  • You haven’t mentioned if there is any stiffness or tingling numbness along with the pain. Also, what is your occupation; do you have prolonged work hours at the computer?
  • Various exercises for the neck, shoulder, back and arms will help relieve the pain and tension in the muscles.
  • Physiotherapy exercises and simple body stretches, help relieve spasm and pain.
  • Yoga asanas are therapeutically relaxing and improve body posture.

Exercise for Spondylosis

  • Sit with your back straight and rotate your head anti-clock wise and clock-wise, three times each.
  • Sit straight and hold your neck erect. Inhale and turn your head to the left, exhale and come back. Inhale and turn to the right, exhale and come back. Inhale and tip the head as far back as possible, exhale and come back. Inhale and drop your head down so that the chin touches the chest, exhale and come back.
  • Grasp your right shoulder with the right hand and left shoulder with the left hand. Touch the elbows, and rotate them in clock wise and anticlockwise so that you feel a pull in the back.

Treatment and Home Remedies for Spondylosis

  • Take care while sleeping. Always sleep on your sides with one or both knees brought up well with head and shoulder slightly forward.
  • Step up the calcium intake.
  • Increase milk consumption (about 2cups daily)
  • Calcium supplements are recommended.
  • If there is tingling numbness, start off vitamin B supplements.
  • Stress contributes greatly to spondylosis. It’s not possible to eliminate stress altogether from our lives, what we can do is reduce its harsh effects on us. Take up some occupation or recreation that helps you unwind and de-stress.
  • Acupressure therapy has miraculous healing benefits for patients suffering from spondylosis.

Headache affects almost everyone some time in their life. Most of the headache is functional in nature. The real pain arises from the irritation of the nerve endings in the shoulder, neck and scalp muscles.
Your wife has particularly one sided headache i.e. right sided; the probable cause may be cervical spondylosis, sinusitis, or a migraine headache.
She is complaining of tingling numbness in her finger, there may be compression in the cervical region, as from this area the nerve endings are supplied to the finger.
Investigation like x-ray cervical spine, x-ray of para nasal sinuses, will clinch the cause.
Neck exercise, acupuncture and acupressure are simple non invasive method of relieving headache.
Readjustment in living style is advisable.

Cervical spondylosis is a disease of the cervical spine, there is compression of the nerve roots passing through the cervical vertebra. Numbness and Pain are associated symptoms of cervical spondylosis. The other cause is carpel tunnel syndrome. There is nerve compression in the wrist joint area.
Some times the pain is concomitant to stressful situation or it gets exaggerated in depression.
Vitamin deficiency has to be corrected and supplemented
You have to rule out any cardiac cause. This may be a referred pain as left hand is involved.
      Meanwhile, continue taking calcium supplements,
      Neck exercise.
      Neck traction.
      Acupressure, acupuncture are alternative therapies
Yoga and meditation can give relief to regular stress.

My mother is suffering from severe lower backache which radiates towards the chest. It aggravates while riding a scooter. X-rays are normal. Doctor suggests it is dorsal lumbar spondylitis. Wanted to know if it is right and in that case some medicine for it.

There are two possibilities, 1. muscular spasm in lower back 2. lumbar spondylitis or infection of tubercular origin which requires further evaluation. Meanwhile give her calcium and vitamin supplements, physiotherapy exercise will help, acupressure will relax her muscles spasm. Avoid riding on scooter for some time.

I have complaint in my lumbar and cervical region. X-rays shows and defined, mild lumbar spondylosis and mild scoliosis and convexity at the left, and also mild sacralisation in l5 vertebra. But 4 months ago, I started doing my yoga and after that it started deteriorating. From 2 years, I have been having low back pain in controlled manner. But after this yoga to strengthen my muscle it gets intensified. What exercises do you recommend. At present I have been in traction and b12 injection and started doing spinal extension exercises. I have about 75% relief, but neck problem still persists.

Following all the test and x-ray, I have been diagnosed “EARLY SIGN OF DORSAL SPONDYLITIS” (D11 and D12).
I have pain at the most lower part of my spine, with stiffness and tightness. I cannot stand straight, feel my back muscle relaxed.
How and what must I must to stop its spread to rest of the spine or muscle. Advice me of any medicine ( allopathy or ayurvedic or exercises).
I am a teacher by profession and have to stand for 3-5 hours per day.

I have a problem with severe pain in the left part of my head, exactly above my left eye, only when I yawn. I also have pain in my back. I consulted a doctor who said these are symptoms of spondylosis. I am a software programmer by profession. The doctor says it’s because I spend long hours sitting and working.
I just want to confirm that is pain in head connected with spondylosis?

For the management of lumbar spondylitis or chronic lower back pain following can be done,
    1. Physical Therapy: Routine exercise of the back will substantially alleviate lower back pain. This exercise includes stretching the two legs slightly apart, placing the hands around the hip joint and moving the upper part of the body sideways. Similarly moving the body forward and backward as much as possible. These simple exercises will strengthen the muscles of the lower back and reduce pain. Don’t over stretch.
    2. Using lumbar support: Lumbar supports are specially designed to limit spine motion, stabilize the spine and body, correct deformity, and reduce mechanical forces.
    3. Hot fomentation is very helpful in reducing back pain. Use of TENS (i.e. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) is also used in management of chronic back pain, which involves electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerves to reduce pain.
    4. Traction: Lumbar traction involves application of longitudinal force on to the spine to relive chronic lower back pain. Traction requires hospitalization or complete bed rest and can last for a few days. It is used in cases when surgery is not recommended.
