Sore Throat is caused when inflammation of the pharynx or back of the throat occurs. This inflammation may involve even the tonsils and adenoids. It occurs frequently when a person has cold or an attack of influenza.

Burning and dryness in the throat, chills, fever and hoarseness, difficulty in swallowing, back of the throat may become red and get covered with a grayish white membrane, swollen lymph glands along the sides of the neck are the symptoms of an acute sore throat. There maybe even post nasal discharge, swelling, sharp pain and high fever.
Causes of Sore Throat
- Bacterial or viral infection is the main cause.
- Common cold, influenza, diphtheria, tonsillitis, measles, mumps and sinusitis can give rise to this condition.
- Excessive smoking and frequent use of voice in professions like teaching, acting and singing are other factors.
Natural Treatment for Sore Throat
- Diet on orange-juice and water for 3-5 days. Bowels should be cleansed daily with warm water enema. Wet pack should be applied to the throat at 2 hourly intervals during the day and night.
- The throat maybe gargled several times with warm water mixed with a little salt.
- A hot Epsom salt bath daily is also very beneficial. Later adopt an all-fruit diet for 3-4 days and gradually a well-balanced diet.
- Mango bark is highly beneficial in treating sore throat. Its fluid can be applied locally or it can be used as a throat gargle.Mix 100 milliliters of the fluid extract with 125 milliliters of water before using.
- Betel leaves can be applied locally to obtain relief. The fruit of betel tree when mixed with honey helps relieve irritating throat cough.
- Decoction prepared from holy basil leaves is a valuable home remedy. The decoction can be taken as a drink or used as a gargle for sore throat.
- Cinnamon oil is regarded as an effective remedy for sore throat from cold. The oil when mixed with honey gives immense relief.
- Fenugreek seed’s is found very effective too. 2 Tablespoon fenugreek seeds should be put to a liter of cold water and boiled for half an hour on a low flame. Strain the liquid when it is warm and use as a gargle.
- Bishops weed is a valuable remedy. An infusion of the seeds mixed with common salt can be used to gargle.
- Avoid sour and cold foods, which irritate the throat.
- Avoid rapid changes in temperature like hot sunshine to air-conditioned rooms.
