Snoring Causes | Home Remedies for Snoring
What Causes Snoring
The airways shutdown periodically during the night and deprive the lungs of air causing snoring. If the snoring is chronic and loud it can exceed 90 decibels and disturb other peoples sleep. This problem is also called obstructive sleep apnea. Adult men, overweight people and children between 3-13 years who have large tonsils, and adenoids or a bad cold can also snore.
Symptoms of Snoring
- Breathing during sleep produces guttural intermittent noise
- Irritability
- Fatigue at daytime
- Stopped breathing episodes.
Causes of Snoring
- Rattling of the walls of the upper air passage (during deep periods of sleep) is due to dryness in the nasal passages or when a person sleeps on his back.
- A nightcap before bed relaxes muscles in the throat and can also produce snoring.
- Medical conditions like enlarged adenoids, deviated septum, nasal polyps, congestion due to a bad cold, obesity can also cause snoring.
Natural Cure for Snoring
- Heavy meals and alcohol within 3 hours of bedtime can cause snoring and should be avoided.
- Obesity decreases the space of airway passages through which we breathe, hence the correct weight should be maintained.
- Sleeping on the back also causes snoring, it should be avoided.
- Nasal obstruction due to upper respiratory problems and allergens should be treated at the earliest. Use a decongestant for nasal congestion.
- Anti-histamines, sleeping pills and tranquilizers suppress neck-muscle tone and therefore should not be taken before bedtime.
- Fresh air keeps the nasal passages moist, so keep the bedroom windows open and use a humidifier.
- The head of your bed should be tilted upward.
