What Is Sinusitis?
- Sinusitis is defined as inflammation of the Para nasal sinuses. Common types are maxillary, frontal and ethimoidal. Sinus headaches are characteristically seen in acute frontal sinusitis.
- Cause usually is infection spread through the maxillary sinus via frontal and nasal duct.
- Dental infection cannot cause frontal sinusitis.
- Clinically patient complains of pain in the frontal region (forehead) and may radiate to the temples. Initially the pain is due to absorption of air in the sinus, when the frontal and nasal duct gets blocked. This is called as “vacuum frontal headache”. This pain is maximum in the morning and subsides during the day as the drainage of mucus secretions occurs in the vertical position.
How to Prevent Sinusitis and Headache?
- Avoid use of scented oils, perfumes etc. as this will usually aggravate the headache.
- Similarly avoid dusty environments.
- Steam inhalation with plain water is useful. Eucalyptus oil and menthol can be added for extended benefits. Steam helps in thinning of secretions, reduces edema and facilitates drainage of secretions.
- Avoid curd, cold water, cold drinks and cold bath.
Home Remedies and Nature Treatment to Cure Sinus Problem and Headaches
- Garlic acts as an antibacterial as well as an analgesic. Take 3 to 4 cloves of garlic, smash and strain its juice and mix it with 2 teaspoon of honey and is to be taken orally.
- Freshly made juice of onion is also of helpful in sinusitis. 2 teaspoon of juice is to be mixed with 2 teaspoon of honey.
- Black pepper should be powdered finely and one teaspoon should be mixed in a cup of warm milk and if this is taken regularly, it prevents recurrent attacks of sinusitis.
- A fine paste made from cinnamon, mixed in water can be externally applied over forehead to relieve headache.
- A teaspoonful of black cumin seeds are to be taken in thin cotton piece of cloth. This is held over the hot pan and inhaled. This provides instant relief. A preparation can be made by taking one part of roasted cumin seeds and two part of honey and taken internally for relieving sinusitis and cold.

Can we have treatment for maxillary sinus.
