Overzealous brushing or constant grinding of the teeth and other wear and tear of the teeth can cause the thinning of the enamel. And movement of the fluid deep inside the tooth stimulates the nerves. Juices, wine, acidic foods and citrus fruits can cause sensitive teeth to ache.

- Avoid foods like hot coffee, ice cream, wine and grapefruit juice that can aggravate the condition.
- Start brushing your teeth vertically, as this minimizes exposure of tooth roots and abrasion.
- To prevent the root surfaces from wearing down use an extra soft toothbrush.
- Switch over to special desensitizing toothpaste containing potassium nitrate or strontium chloride.
- Dental plaque can be reduced, by getting it cleaned by a dentist. And this will reduce the sensitivity.
