Natural treatment for Sciatica
Sciatica is a serious disease of the nervous system. It refers to a severe pain that runs down the sciatic nerve (that begins from lower part of the back and goes down to the thigh), which supplies sensation to the back of the leg and foot.
Symptoms of Sciatica
- Severe pain in the buttocks, which may radiate to the thigh and the calf muscles, is the main symptom.
- Weakness of the calf muscles.
- Inability to stand due to crippling pain, disappearance of the pain on bed rest and return on extra exertion or slight injury.
Causes of Sciatica
- Compression of sciatica nerve at its roots due to any injury to the spine is the root cause.
- Osteoarthritis of the lower spine, ruptured disc, infection or toxic material near the area of the nerve may result in this disease.
- Prolonged standing or sitting, running, riding a bicycle, exposure to cold and dampness, pregnancy, tumors of the pelvic, deformities of the lower spine are other factors.
- The real cause is however the direct outcome of excess acidity.
Natural remedies for Sciatica
- The patient should be confined to bed rest on firm mattresses for few days. The patient should adhere to a raw juice diet for at least 5 days and later onto a restricted diet for 7 days. Then adopt a well-balanced diet with emphasis on whole grains, milk, homemade cottage cheese, raw vegetables and sprouted seeds.
- Garlic is found very beneficial in the treatment of sciatica. Small pieces of garlic should be taken with a teaspoon of honey with each meal. It helps relieve pain and suffering.
- Nutmeg relieves pain in sciatica. Coarsely powdered nutmeg should be fried in gingili oil and should be applied on affected areas.
- Pulp obtained from the herb Indian aloe should be taken daily to obtain relief.
- Lemon juice has alkaline effect in the body on consumption and helps relieve sciatica.
- Chamomile oil is found effective in relieving pain. It should be diluted with vegetable oil and rubbed on affected parts.
- Cold hip baths in the morning and hot and cold hip baths at night have proved effective too.
- Yoga, sun baths every alternate day, dry friction bath every morning and sleeping on firm mattresses are other helpful measures.
