Question: I have been suffering from typhoid for the last three years which heals after taking anti-biotics but comes back again. What should I do?
Answer:
Typhoid is an infectious disease, caused by salmonella typhi.
Salmonella typhi causes bacterial enterocolitis, i.e., the inflammation of the mucosa of the bowels.
It invades the Peyer’s patches and produces ulceration of the lymphoid tissue.
You are suffering since the last 3 years, how soon after the treatment does the relapse happen?
What medication are you taking?
What are the symptoms during an attack?
A chronic state occurs due to gall bladder colonization with the bacteria.
A chronic state is hazardous because, it can affect bones, joints, or even the brain tissue.
Typhoid Diet and Treatments
Management of a chronic state is strictly through diet and taking adequate precautionary measures, so that a relapse doesn’t occur.
Stop milk and its products, beef, egg, and poultry, till you have recovered fully.
The causative organism spreads through a feco-oral route; hence it is of utmost importance that you maintain absolute cleanliness. Wash hands thoroughly after visiting the toilet.
Nutritive measures can alone help you in ensuring lasting cure and are very crucial in management of typhoid.
- Drink boiled and properly filtered water.
- Wash your feet and hands thoroughly, especially after outdoors.
- Keep food in closed containers.
- Have steamed/boiled food only.
- Do not eat outside food
- Take 1 spoon honey in a glass of hot water and add 1/2 a lime to it, every morning
- Avoid- tea, spicy food, coffee, alcohol and soft drinks.
- Increase fluid intake – glucose water, soups, fresh juices, coconut water.
- In certain cases of a chronic carrier, it becomes necessary to surgically remove the gall bladder.

Fluids (water, fruit juices) should be liberally consumed, at least 2 liters of fluids per day because there is excessive fluid loss in perspiration or sweating in typhoid fever. Since the digestive tract is involved in Typhoid you should stick to a soft, bland and low fiber diet. Fruit juices are helpful as they are instant source of carbohydrates and vitamins, useful in generalized weakness. Avoid Spicy food.
