Acute inflammation of the lungs is called pneumonia. They are of 2 types, lobar pneumonia and bronco-pneumonia. When both the lungs are affected (double pneumonia) the condition becomes serious.
Symptoms of Pneumonia
- They begin with a cold in the head or throat.
- Sharp pain in the chest.
- Difficulty in breathing, shivering, chill, fever and headache.
- Cough with pinkish or brownish sputum are the main symptoms.
- The sputum may become rusty colored in serious cases.
- Temperature rises to 105 degree Fahrenheit and pulse may go up to 150 beats per minute.
- Patients sweat profusely and feel miserable. In young children they may cause delirium and convulsions.
Causes of Pneumonia
Various types of germs and viruses are responsible for the disease.
Home Treatment of Pneumonia
- Adopt a raw juice diet for 5-10 days. When the fever subsides adopt an exclusive all-fruit diet for 3-4 days. Administer warm water enema regularly. Thereafter embark on a well-balanced diet.
- Avoid smoking, alcohol, all meats, condiments, tea, coffee, refined foods, white flour and sugar and fried foods.
- Sipping cold water is beneficial in the treatment of pneumonia. Sip cold water at short intervals till fever persists.
- Herbal tea made from fenugreek seeds is excellent during early acute stages of pneumonia. It dispels toxin, produces perspiration and reduces the duration of fever. Up to 4 cups can be taken daily. Quantity should be reduced as condition improves.
- Sesame seeds are valuable remedy. An infusion of the seeds mixed with a tablespoon of linseed, a desert-spoon of honey and a pinch of salt expel catarrhal matter and phlegm.
- Garlic is a marvelous remedy. It reduces temperature, pulse rate and respiration within 48 hours. Garlic juice can be applied to the chest.
- Rub turpentine oil over ribcage and cover it with a warm cloth to relieve pain associated with pneumonia.

What is Pneumonia?
In Pneumonia, the tissues lining one or both the lungs become inflamed, impairs breathing by making it difficult for the oxygen to reach the blood stream and affects even the brain, heart and kidneys.
Some of the symptoms of Pneumonia
1. Chills and fever (from 100 to 105 degree Fahrenheit).
2. Shortness of breath and chest pain on inhalation.
3. Fatigue and weakness.
4. Rapid breathing and pulse rate.
5. Sore throat, headache and muscle pain.
6. Cough sometimes with bloody sputum, which may last up-to 6 weeks.
7. Mental confusion, blue tinge to skin and extreme breathing difficulty in severe cases.
How is Pneumonia caused?
1. It is mainly due to bacterial or viral infection – often as a complication of a lingering cold or a bout with flu or bronchitis.
2. When body defense weakens due to old age, illness or impaired immunity, the bacteria that are found in the throats multiply and enter the lungs.
3. Many viruses can also infect the lungs, but influenza viruses mostly progress to pneumonia.
4. It can strike anytime, but is usually common during autumn and winter months.
5. Smoking, alcoholism, immunosuppressive medications, chemotherapy, surgery, prolonged use of antibiotics; Asthma, AIDS, heart disease, chronic kidney disease; certain fungi and inhalation of certain chemicals and gases are other factors.
Natural treatment for Pneumonia
1. Pain relievers can be taken to reduce pain and lower fever.
2. Lung-secretions should be loosened, by using humidifier, drinking lots of water, so that they can be expelled easily.
3. Shortness of breath and fever can be reduced by plenty of rest.
4. Place a heating pad on your chest for 10 minutes to get some relief from chest pain.
5. If you have painful, dry, persistent cough use dextromethorphan.
Prevention of Pneumonia
1. If you are at a greater risk, get yourself immunized with a vaccine.
2. Tobacco weakens your immune system and hence combating infection becomes difficult.
3. A flu vaccination annually can protect you from pneumonia due to flu.

Hi I was hospitalized this year February.When i got there i was diagnosed with bronco pneumonia.I could not feel my feet and hands felt nothing it was like a cramp on the tip of my fingers my body was numb I could not lift my hand to the head or hold anything or pick it up. Now i sometimes feel my fingers have those cramps and they vanish and a headache.

My 4 year old son has recently just recovered from pneumonia after the doctor prescribed him with antibiotics. However, he is still having this dry unproductive cough. Is there any child friendly home remedies for pneumonia I can use to help him?

I’m in the same boat. Just read that coconut oil given in food helps and I’ve been giving licorice tea. It seems to help.

Treating pneumonia
