What Causes Phlegm in Chest

Phlegm in chest can be a clinical syndrome which many individuals develop in response to long-continued action of various types of irritant on the bronchial mucosa. The most important of these is tobacco smoke, but they also include dust, smoke and fumes occurring as specific occupational hazards or as part of a general atmospheric pollution in industrial cities and towns. Infection is sometimes the precipitating factor in the onset of chronic bronchitis, but its main role is in aggravating the established condition.
The disorder occurs most commonly in middle and late adult life and more males are affected.

Streptococci pneumoniae and /or hemophilus influenzae are isolated in most cases. These organisms become more numerous during acute attack.

Phlegm in chest has to be thoroughly investigated and proper diagnosis has to be done as to what is the cause of it. This can be a sign of a chronic lung disorder such as chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis (lung collapse), tuberculosis etc.
