Symptoms of Nephritis | Causes and Treatment of Nephritis Syndrome

Nephritis is inflammation of the kidneys. It can be either acute or chronic and is a serious condition. It can cause death if not treated in initial stages. It often strikes during childhood or adolescence.

Symptoms of Nephritis

  • Pain in the kidney that extends till the urethra.
  • Highly colored scanty urine.
  • Dull pain in the back and fever.
  • Puffiness in the face, swollen ankles and feet are the main symptoms.
  • In chronic cases patient may develop uremia, frequent urination during night and rise in Blood Pressure are other symptoms.

Causes of Nephritis

  • Infection of the throat.
  • Rheumatic fever or scarlet fever is usually followed by nephritis.
  • Wrong dietary habits, excessive drinking, and habitual use of chemical agents.
  • Frequent use of painkillers and suppressive medical treatment are the main causes.
  • Nutritional deficiencies also contribute.

Treatment of Nephritis

  • For acute nephritis fast for 10 days till symptoms subside. Take vegetable juices of cucumber, celery and carrot. Administer warm water enema daily. Adopt an all fruit diet for 5 days followed by fruits and milk diet for 7 days. Finally embark upon a well-balanced diet.
  • In chronic cases undertake a juice fast for 3 days followed by a 10 day restricted diet.
  • Avoid chocolate, cocoa, excess salt and vegetables like spinach and rhubarb.
  • Papaya and bananas are the best fruits.
  • Garlic, cucumber, celery, parsley and asparagus are excellent vegetables.
  • Bananas are valuable in nephritis because of their low protein and salt content. Consume 8-9 bananas a day for 3-4 days.
  • Carrot juice is also a good remedy. A glassful of carrot juice mixed with 1 tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of lime juice should be taken before breakfast everyday.
  • Smoking and drinking should be given up completely.
  • Hot Epsom salt bath should be taken on every alternate day to provide relief to the kidneys.
  • Outdoor exercises and fresh air are good for all cases of nephritis. Walk at least three kilometers once or twice daily.
  • Keep away from excitement, hurry and exertion.
  • You can also try taking choline rich foods for nephritis treatment.
