A sore throat can be irritating and painful. It usually occurs when the sensitive membranes of the throats are irritated by smoke, dust, hot foods, excessive coughing and loud talking.
Herbal Natural Remedies for Sore Throat
- Slippery Elm has been one of the popular sore throat remedy in North America. The inner bark is used, which has a gel-like substance called mucilage.The substance swells when mixed with water, and it acts by coating the throat to help reduce irritation and gives a soothing effect.
- An herb used to treat sore throat for centuries is the marshmallow. It has also the substance mucilage that coats and relieves sore throat. It is not advisable though to those who have diabetes because it can lower the blood sugar level when mixed with diabetes medication.
- Honeysuckle flower are commonly found in Chinese herbal stores and is known as an effective sore throat remedy. It is used like a tea, boiling around a quart of water added with a cup of the flower and allowed to steep for ten minutes. Four cups of the strained mixture is recommended for drinking each day until the soreness subsides.
- A mixture of one teaspoon apple cider vinegar, a pinch of cayenne, one teaspoon honey, and juice from one-fourth lemon is added to a cup of hot water. The tea mixture is an old home remedy for sore throat that is more effective if taken four cups each day.
- A throat spray made from the herb sage has been proven to be more effective than commercially available sprays. There may be some minor side effects after spraying like throat dryness but relief can be felt two hours after spraying.
Home Remedies for a Sore Throat
- Gargle with a mixture of ΒΌ tsp salt and 4 ounces warm water as needed.
- Sip a mixture of one cup warm water, juice of one lemon, and 2 teaspoons honey.
- Gargle with a mixture of white vinegar, salt, crushed Vitamin C, and water.
- A chili pepper ingredient, Capsaicin makes the throat numb so that gargling dried chili and water is an effective way to get rid of sore throat.
- Drink lots of liquids except for orange juice and acidic juices which can irritate the throat more.
