Question: I have trouble sleeping well at night. I keep waking up around 1am and cannot go back to sleep for a few hours. I am an engineer and not really stressed with anything. Is this called insomnia? If yes, can you please suggest me some natural remedy to treat insomnia?
Answer: Sleep is a periodic state of rest for the body which is absolutely essential for its efficient functioning.
Causes of Insomnia
- Insomnia/ sleeplessness could occur due to a variety of reasons – the commonest being anxiety, worry, stress.
- Anger can also cause sleeplessness.
- Irregular and inadequate diet is also a contributing factor.
- Excessive tea/ coffee and habits such as smoking and alcohol irritate the nervous system, depriving one of sleep.
- Sleeping pills are no remedy. They are habit forming and less effective, when taken for long periods of time.
Home and Natural Remedies for Insomnia (Sleeplessness)
- Fix your bed time and stick to it. Donot sleep too late.
- Never watch T.V. or read a disturbing book before sleeping.
- Stop any kind of strenuous work, physical or mental 2hours before bedtime.
- Avoid tea, coffee, especially at night.
- Stay away from alcohol and cigarettes.
- Warm milk with honey, ½ an hour before bed, is soothing and relaxing, and induces sleep.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, optimum dietary intake, complete with whole cereals, pulses, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and reducing the consumption of processed, canned, tinned, and junk foods.
