Symptoms of Mumps and remedies to cure it
Mumps is a viral infection of the salivary glands, gonads and occasionally other parts of the body. Children between 5-15 years are most affected. It is a contagious disease.
Symptoms of Mumps
- Pain and swelling is the first symptom.
- Pain under one ear with stiffened neck and jaw.
- Fever that subsides within 3-4 days.
- Swelling under one jaw that later extends to the other jaw.
- Difficulty in chewing and swallowing are the main symptoms.
- In females the ovaries maybe infected and in males the testicles are affected.
- Mumps can cause severe headache, loss of appetite, vomiting and pain in the abdomen.
Causes of Mumps
Here, virus attacks the salivary glands of the mouth particularly the parotid gland. The disease appears only after 2 weeks from exposure to the virus. Dietetic error is however the root-cause.
Natural home remedies for Mumps
- The patient should stay in bed till fever returns to normal.
- Diluted orange juice should be given for few days. Warm water enema should be administered daily.
- Mouth should be cleared with an antiseptic wash.
- Adopt an all fruit diet for 2 days, after the swelling has reduced and food can be swallowed comfortably. Then finally embark on a well-balanced diet.
- Leaves of Margosa are useful in the treatment of mumps. Paste made from margosa leaves and turmeric should be applied externally to affected parts.
- Seeds of asparagus are also valuable. Paste made by grinding asparagus seeds with Fenugreek seeds should be applied over the swelling.
- Dry ginger paste can be applied to the swollen parts to reduce swelling and subside pain.
- Paste made from Indian gooseberry reduces swelling and provides relief.
- The herb, Indian aloe reduces pain from mumps. Piece of the leaf should be warmed and applied over the swelling.
