Causes for Pain in Mouth
The most common cause of pain in mouth are mouth ulcers or open sores in mouth, which appear as yellowish spots. Usually they appear on inner surface of cheeks, lips, tongue, soft palate and base of gums, giving rise to pain in the mouth.
There are many possible reasons for these mouth ulcers
What Causes Mouth Ulcers
- These may be familial.
- Due to excess stress.
- Hormonal origin- especially in girls during puberty.
- If a person is anemic.
- Over-brushing of teeth causing injury leading to ulceration.
- Irritation by particular eating habits like excess tea, coffee, alcohol, spices and tobacco.
How to Cure Mouth Ulcers
- For immediate relief avoid hot and spicy food, tea, coffee, alcohol and tobacco.Avoid sour things including curd and pickles.
- Usually constipation is associated with this condition a mild laxative can be taken.
Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers
- A decoction of the leaves of either Indian gooseberry or heena or the guava, singly or mixed with alum powder is a very good gargle for oral ulcers which helps minimizing mouth pain.
- Licorice is proved to be beneficial in treatment of oral ulcers. Chewing a piece of it, refreshes pain and cleanses the teeth, arresting pain and tooth decay. Licorice is boiled in water, releases a sweet taste and can be taken as a warm infusion or decoction similar to tea.
- Powdered camphor, when applied on the ulcer, can also give the relief from pain.
- Press an ice chip onto tender canker sores or suck on ice to cool a burning tongue.
- Some teeth recoil at the slight feel of cold, in that case the ice massage should be given on the outside of the jaw.
- Hold a wet tea bag to a canker sore. Black tea contains tannin, an astringent with pain-relieving power that’s also found in some over-the-counter remedies.
