A friend of mine contracted Lyme disease from a tick bite she got while working in her own garden. So it is also very important to protect yourself from getting bitten by ticks on your property. We spread tick tubes around – they are from a company called Damminix – they utilize the nesting instincts of mice which carry the ticks into human areas to deliver the pesticide (which doesn’t harm the mice). It is quite a clever system, and seems to really work.
